Will SSI exchangers make car louder?

I am putting the SSI heat exchangers on my car and am trying to decide which muffler to get. A search has giving me a lot of ideas but I can not find a sound comparison to the stock setup I presently have on my 911SC.
Will the exchangers with a stock 2 in 1 out muffer be louder than the stock 1 in 1 out muffler I presently have? What is a good 2 in 1 out muffler that is just a little louder than stock?

Drew I am in the same search mode you are as I am backdating my 3.2 with SSI's. However, I had a '72E with SSI's and a stock 2 in 1 out factory muffler. It definitely was louder than my stock 3.2 system so I have decided to go with just a stock 2 in 1 muffler with the SSI's on my 3.2. 2 in 2 out muffler will be MUCH louder than what you presently have. Keep in mind backdating with SSI's will be somewhat louder just because you will no longer have the muffling effect of the catalytic converter.

I found the SSI's plus Monty single outler muffler was louder than the stock setup. I don't know if that was a result of the muffler or the SSI's.

I have a 3,2 with a backdated exhaust. Muffler is 2 in 1 out. It's louder than stock, but it's something that you can live with. The sound is "faster" and louder at tickover instead of mellow and rumbling as it is with the stock setup. My muffler is a Dansk and I really love it. Great sound without resonance.

Mikkel's experience is similar to what I found with my 3.0.
The Dansk 2/1 and SSI combo has a very pleasing sound, and will not wear out your ears. Brad Roberts of SSI was the one who recommended that setup to me, and I'm glad I took his advice.

Just a question. I was thinking SSIs myself on my 3.0L/SC. Already have the catalyser out, and a Bursch muffler along a light flywheel. Will i really gain something going to SSI vs my actual set-up?

Thanks!

I have a 82SC with SSI's and single out sport Dansk. There was a very noticable performance improvement. The sound off of idle is great not too loud. At idle I don't care for the sound a little tinney or even sounds like a american V-8 with a slight exhaust leak.

First off...it's the muff NOT the SSIs that will make it louder. The Dansk 2in 1 out is slightly louder than the stock model of SAME 2 in 1 out design. The 1 in 1 out you have NOW is a very restrictive muffler and is further muffled by all the bends and curves required to get a cat in between the HEs and the muff.

As to gaining hp...yes on a 3.0, not much on a 3.2. The smog required POS 3.0 exhaust restricted my reving considerably....once SSIs were installed, it was a BIG difference.

I have SSIs and a GHL dual in/single out muffler. At constant throttle the car is pretty quiet. Once you crack the throttle open and get the engine revving, well, its darn loud, but in a good way. On the hwy just cruising the exhaust note is there but not offensive. With the windows up, even rodding on the thing is not offensive. But, outside the car I know its loud, based on the periodic hands-over-the-ears gestures I get from pedestrians when I punch it if first gear. I like it though...

I have SSI's and a Dansk 2 in 1 out muffler on my 1982 SC. I love the sound and the added performance. Before the muffler change I was lukewarm on the sound. But after the addition of the SSI's and the Dansk, the sound really opened up. Now it sounds like an air colled Porsche. I've gotten compliments from friends at PCA DE's that they like the sound. One added benefit is occasionally setting off car alarms in parking garages!!!

I have the same set up as Mikkel, Doug Zielke and Chicago, SSI's with 2/1 Dansk and have been quite happy with the sound and with a bit more low end torque. The sound is a function of the muffler and a small amount due to lack of restriction from the cat with SSI's. Myself, I especially like the crackling sound the SSI's make after the engine is shut down

You need a dual inlet muffler for SSIs. SC mufflers are single inlet so you'd need to get an early (pre-'75) muffler.

I read a while back the SSI was planning on making a OEM style muffler. Anyone know if theirs is available yet?

Maybe my question posted earlier was unclear. My 3.0L has the catalyzer removed, with Bursch muffler and stock heat exchangers.

What gain will i see goint to SSIs?
I have to have a 2-in 1-out muffler with SSI right?

Thanks to all.

So you have a test pipe instead of a CAT? I'm not sure if that setup has any more hp than stock. I've read claimed horsepower gains from going to SSIs in an SC anywhere from 13-22hp. Has anyone on the board dynoed their SC before & after this mod?

I'm going to be replacing my '74 2.7 with SSIs and Webers with a '78 3.0. I'm going to switch the SSIs and Webers onto the 3.0. I have a new OEM muffler with 2 in 1 out on the 2.7, so that could go on the 3.0.

So, how does the Dansk compare with the OEM?
