muffler install questions

Last week I replaced my stock sc muffler with the single in, single out, Dansk sport muffler with a 70mm tip and all went well.

Then I started looking at it and noticing the tail pipe was hanging too low and a little to the right. So today I loosened all the bolts, the ones that connect the muffler to the premuffler and the ones that connect the premuffler to the heat exchangers. Repositioned the muffler, tightened everything up and all went well.

Then, I started the car and this time I noticed it was a little louder then before. Hmmm?

Do I have to use new gaskets in the premuffler to heat exchanger connections now that I’ve moved things around a little, the gaskets are only six months old? Or do I simply have to tighten the bolts more now that things have heated up and cooled? Is there any kind of magic goop that should go on with exhaust connections to get a better seal?

Also, I noticed that the hanger that the muffler straps hang on also has a tab that the muffler seam can rest on. So that’s how I installed the muffler, resting on the tabs of the hanger and held in position by the straps. Was that correct or should the muffler simply hang by the straps alone?

This is my first exhaust adventure and I’m kinda just doing what I think is right, but I’d love to get a few pointers from people who have done this before?

you may need new gaskets - they get a pretty hard life!

there are various sealants around although i don't use any - shouldnt need it. some motorbike guys use silicon to seal joints.

i think you will find that the thing should hang from the straps alone, and of course the pre-muff flange.

btw - where'd you get it from? i have a twin out dansk, and thought about changing back to single......

i just installed my muffler 2 days ago. i found that i got the appropriate fit supporting the muffler seam to the supporting plate. i missed the left hand side tab and noticed that one muffler strap would not tighten all the away. loosened tthe bolts and re-fitted and both straps went down to their stopping points.

in re: to new gaskets, i had one that about 8 months old and one that was about 4 months old (long story) and fould the older one was way more "deformed" than the newer one. i would think new gasket are required everytime for proper fit.

Yes I think your right about the new gaskets. When I take my foot off the gas I get too much burbaling sp? So apparently, air is leaking into the exhaust. Sounds like a race car. I've ordered new gaskets from pelican this morning and I'll change them out this weekend.

Just so you know I did try to order the Dansk from pelican but was told it wouldn't fit my car and I would have to go with the 84mm stainless one. I questioned this but the sales person seemed sure? I believe he was mistaken, and if he was it would be the first time pelican has made any type of error with my orders. So I'll continue to call them first in the future. Generally, they have the best depth of knowlege and this bbs section can't be matched.

So I hope I won't be banished for getting it from performance products. If the pelican sales person was right then my 79sc now has the wrong muffler attatched to it.

Can you confirm for me that the aluminized 70mm Dansk single out is correct. Or did I goof up in some way?

Supporting the muffler seam on the tabs of the hanger seemed like the right thing to do but it's great to have you confirmed that.

I ordered new gaskets from pelican already so this weekend I'll reinstall the premuffler and get everything done right.

It's great to be able to get feedback on these projects, it allows me to take on things I've never done with confidence.

Hopefully one day I'll be able to advise others on their projects, this is a very nice community we have here.

Interesting. I dropped my muffler last weekend and used the old gaskets. They've been on for about a year. No leaks. I made sue I used the same one on each side and in the same way. I.e. I didn't flip either of them. Who knows, maybe there's a leak but I can't hear it over the 2.7 rumble!

BTW, my girlfriend saw your avatar a few weeks ago and flipped! She's a big Bugs Bunny fan. I think because of the choice, you have a new admirer! Hahahaa

Yea, sounds like your gaskets worked a second time, thats what I was hoping for. I simply loosened all the bolts and moved things a little to reposition the mufler and now I have an exhaust leak.

The way I can tell for sure is after you let off the gas if there is any small backfires it means air is getting into the exhaust and fuel continues to burn in the pipes. If you don't hear anything like that, it's tight. All of lifes problems should be this small.

Oh, I grew up watching bugs bunny so it seemed like a natural, besides, I'm still growing up.
