Fiberglass "sheet metal" for 3.6 conversion?
I am planning my 3.6 conversion to be undertaken this winter (I just bought an engine
) and I was talking to my mechanic about the sheet metal modifications. Rather than modifying the factory sheet metal, there are fiberglass pieces available for 3.6 conversions. From reading the archives and active posts, it does not sound like it is a very popular option. The kit runs $499.Does the custom fiberglass make for a cleaner and neater installation? Does it save any notable weight? Why did you decide against it? For your reference, here is a link to the kit: Fiberglass "sheet metal" 3.6 conversion pieces

Get the side and front pieces from an SC and fit/modify. It is the easy solution. I have done both and the fiberglass is a pain, it's messy to work with and if you cut to much off you can't rivet a patch piece on like with metal.
SC's are good for something:

I know absolutely nothing about 3.6 conversions, but fibre glas is a poor heat conducter although the tin directs the air past the engine I'm sure some heat is dissapated through the tin.
I would find somebody who has done this before I went ahead.

PMS sells a complete set of modified sheet metal finished in powder coat.
602-244-0911 The fiberglass pieces will need to be fitted and painted. Is this a 964 or 993 motor? |

FWIW, I did not have to modify the sheetmetal of my '93 3.6 to fit in my '81 SC.

Stock 993 sheet metal will work but it won't mate up properly to the seal of the engine compartment especially on the sides, that's why I used SC tin. I used a manual elliptical shaped punch for the lower plug wire grommet hole on each side. Even with the SC tin I had to fab a new rubber lip for the rear piece to properly seal. I am probably a little to picky. I just remember how important the cooling tin was from my beetle days (which are not over
)
