All this talk about jacks. The best jack in the world is this one, hands down:
http://www.drivewerks.com/catalog/shopcart/TOOL/POR_TOOL_ACHyd1_pg1.htm I really can't see how anyone can argue on this. This the *only* jack I use for everything I do. I got by using cheapo jacks before - never again. I moved up to the real thing, and have never looked back. As author of several automotive books, and an enthusiast myself, this is the *only* jack that I recommend and endorse. And I've had others (HF, Sears, Snap-on, etc.) - tried them all. This is the one. You will not be disappointed. My GM here at Pelican just got one (left over one). He also cannot understand why anyone would use another jack. "Wayne, you were right" he said to me the other day. "This jack is awesome!" -Wayne

Like I said, spend $400 and get a good jack. I was buying a new helmet and was *itching about the $375 price, the salesman said "you can get a $50 helmet if that is all your head is worth". I ended up buying the latest lightweight carbon fiber $500 unit. You get what you pay for!!

I've got the AC jack as described by Wayne, I can only say that I've have (like many of you) been working on cars both professionally and as a hobby since I was 15. The AC jack is without doubt the best floor jack I have ever come across. You get what you pay for. Safety should be your first concern.
Just my 2¢

There is only one style of budget priced alum jack. And it may not be the best POS in the world, but by God, it won't break your back carrying it when you need to. Did I mention it won't rust? Mine is sitting out in the rain right now. Forgot it last night. Last edited by Zeke; 12-07-2003 at 06:55 AM.. |

I agree with you guys 100% about 'cheap tools' and should've qualified that this jack requirement is for a reasonably portable track jack (as Milt astutely pointed out). I am at the track perhaps 20 days a year so I don't feel a burning need for a $600 alloy race jack at this point. The HF unit lasted me well over a year IIRC. I hoisted JW's full-sized Snap-On jack out of his van yesterday and dragged it across the pits to my car, and instantly gained a renewed appreciation for the alloy jacks.

Oh yeah - Milt I was lifting either the ass-end or one side of the teener; I forget. But figure 1000-1200lbs?

I use a Ajax/Walker/Lincoln 1956 model here at the house. I had it rebuilt about 2 mos ago. It had been rebuilt sometime in 1972. Each of the repair shops here have stamped serial numbers on it and can give be a history of what work was performed on it.
I have another floor jack. Its a HeinWarner/Sears/Blackhawk. It has an internal seal that has gone bad. It was purchased new in 1980. I will replace that seal as soon as I can. I use a 2-wheeler to transport the jacks from the garage to the patio. I can respect the comments from those folks that have trucked the things around.
