I can't believe I watched that whole thing. I was waiting for a big bang-- it never came.

Just watching made me tense. Those things certainly rev nicely to 9 grand.

I'd like to know what finally went on it. No valves, or springs to float. What would break first on one of those? The crank (or whatever it's called on a rotary)?

Reminds me of timing my car at 6K.

I only watched the first 3 minutes. Does it go the entire 10?

I never owned a rotory; however, judging from the sound the engine was making when they tried to crank it after the failure, the rotor seals (tip of rotors) must have burned up..nothing there! When there was not enough compression the engine wouldn't continue to run. On restart it wouldn't fire, but the thing seemed to be spinning.

Thta's nuts! THe car was 2 feet from the garage and another car. I was waiting for a piece to come flying out of the engine bay! (easier to do with a non-rotory engine).

I've seen a video of a shop class that as a project had to blow engines up with various goals, "longest running before dying", "highest rpms", etc....

From what I remember they were using regular old domestic iron, it was pretty entertaining, but when the one finally did blow that I remember it basically just shut down.

I liked the part "do we even have a fire extinguisher"? This was after the thing melted down and the ehaust had caught fire.

I was amazed at the fact the water temp gauge didnt even budge until the coolant burped out of the radiator. Prolly would have kept running if they had the radiator cap on....

You have to love the fact that they didn't expect a fire. I like how the kid said "dude look at the race pipe, its glowing". I think he meant down pipe.

That "race pipe" the fella was referring to was either a high flow cat or a cat bypass? Rotary engines have much higher exhaust temperatures and get the cat really hot for emissions purposes I believe.

After the coolant went bye-bye, that thing had to be running SUPER hot!

If they wanted to blow the motor, the should have taken it to an open, empty road and mechanically overrevved it. But that would entail some sort of tow-away situation. These guys certainly were not prepared, nor willing, to get involved in anything like that! Took 'em forever to get the freakin' garden hose!!!!!

9 grand is pretty funny............

Scary! I exited out of the video after about 30 seconds. Mechanical abuse makes me cringe.

Never overheat a Wankel. Could burn your house down!

30 sec. dd74? You missed all the stupidity!!!!!

Was pretty uneventful for a long time. The motor revved right up to about 8750 and sat there. After a few min. the motor decided to step up to 9000 (at least that's what the factory tach. said). Just sat there spinning along at 9 grand for quite a while. Then she started getting hot, and hotter, and HOTTER. Soon the radiator cap came off and lotsa steam/white smoke. Temp. gauge was pegged past "H". Dummies still kept 'er going at 9k. Eventually just shut down- no major noises or anything spectacular like that.

Their post-destruction inspection found the exhaust to be literally red hot and something was flaming underneath as well. Took 'em at least a minute or two to scramble to the kitchen for an extinguisher (which I don't think they found) and then went to the backyard for the garden hose. What a bunch of dopes.
