Yes it might have similar results, but without the anodized finish, I can remove the stain with metal polish and a rag. With the anodized finish, the metal will be etched and stained below the finish, and the whole wheel would have to be stripped and re finished.

Strip the anodizing by dipping the wheel in a tub of bottled water and drain cleaner. Obviously you need a big wide tub to do it but it’ll work

Watch this guy take the orange anodizing off an RC car wheel with bottled water and regular drain cleaner you get most anywhere

Back in the 90s, we used to use oven cleaner to remove anodizing (awful teals, reds, and purples) from MTB parts to put them on our BMX bikes. We'd spray it directly on, wait 10-15 minutes, and then rinse them with water. Never damaged the aluminum, but IDK if the same can be said for brain cells.

I used oven cleaner.............let them sit for about 30 mins, and BOOM! Done.

Other than an obviously large, but narrow tank, any suggestions to DIY-contain the occasional door window frame to de-anodize? Would the lye/water destroy e.g. 5 mil plastic?

Oven cleaner and elbow grease. Period.
