Advanced oil cooler for DE with an SC?
My stock SC runs cool at AX and never ran hot. I am preparing for DE next year and will have some hot days in the 90-100 F range.
Do I need a carrera style oil cooler? Can I keep the loop and install a scoop? What do you SCers do? TIA, George |

My C3 w/ stock engine and loop cooler always ran hot on the track. Ducting didn't help enough. Final solution for that engine was a bigger radiator type cooler w/ ducting and peripheral seals.

I ditched the loop for a mocal radiator type (w/o fan) cooler. It helped remarkably for street driving on hot days. It even helped at AutoX, but still wasn't good at the last DE on a hot day. I will likely be installing a fan this winter to augment the airflow when the car isn't moving. This won't help with the temp rising during a session at the track, but will allow it to cool more between sessions. This is really a temporary fix. If I ran sessions close together, it likely wouldn't be enough. The right way to do it is like Bill V described. A larger cooler, with a fan, proper ducting, or a front mounted cooler. Elephant Racing's oil lines should also help, but I have not used them, so I can't comment on that.
If you can swing the budget, get a Carrera cooler with fan. It will be a good starting point.

I had a loop cooler that just didn't cut the mustard by any means...I think I may have other issues. I switched to a Carrera cooler and it has helped tremendously. I am using a custom made bumper scoop as well. It scoops about 50% more air than the plastic/glass one currently available. Works well on very hot days at speed. Ran Pocono last year in 95 degrees and it was okay. Of course there were times I was doing 120-125 so that helps quite a bit. At a slower track like Lime Rock my car runs quite a bit warmer and the above set up could use some performance enhancing...like a fan. I am hoping that my impending SSI upgrade is going to pull some heat away from the engine as well.

I have to say that the radiator type (mocal) cooler was the best upgrade
I made to my 83SC ! I went with the 19 row with manual fan. |

YOu definatley need to upgrade to a true radiator style cooler, if you're thnking about DE's in the high temps.
For ducting, I use one of JMPRO cooler scoops on my SC, but there's other ways to do it. A lot of guys cut a hole in the headlight bucket in the passenger side fender, then just remove the lamp at the track. |

I have a stock Carrera cooler from an 1988 model with a fan. I also take out my turn signal and have a cooler scoop in the side marker light to get more cool air into the fender area. The car never goes over 220F at the track (Although we don't get much above 95F here). However, the car also has a tail which helps the engine run cooler anyway due to creating a high pressure zone right where the air gets sucked into the engine bay.
Good luck, Noel

Unlike Carrera style and other radiator type coolers, the loop doesn't respond much to increased airflow. So a scoop isn't going to do much all by itself.
Your best bet is a Carrera fender cooler. If you still need more cooling - - duct more air to the cooler - finned oil lines - center mounted cooler
