Loud Whine...

Hello all,

I am getting a high-pitched whine coming from the driver's side of the engine compartment when I engage the heater. I can actually hear it from inside the car and it's quite obvious when I step outside. The noise does not seem to be affecting the performace of the heater itself, however I seem to be getting a slight burning smell inside the cabin, although I can't be sure I'm not imagining it . When I turn off the heat, the sound immediately disappears. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this noise, and do I risk causing further damage if I continue running the heat.

Thanks!

Not sure what your car is, so that may affect the answers.

The heater blower is located on the driver's side inside the engine compartment. It pushes additional air through the system. It's an electrical unit which does wear out after a while. If you can locate it (it's kind of hard to miss); the big electric blower looking thing on the top left of the engine, you'll find a plug at the electrical connection. Unplug and see if your whine goes away.

Make sure your wife is not in the engine compartment. That could be another potential source of your problem.

Your heater blower motor is shot. Very common problem. Once you get it out you'll probably find the bearings are shot and the housing is wallowed out. You'd probably be better off disconnecting it until you can replace it. OEM replacements are in the $250 range, or you can try:

Maybe someone snuck in overnight and installed a supercharger?

Does the car feel faster?

Sorry...

Check Pelican first but I have another source should you need it.

Jason, watch out for that grenade headed your way. You just might avoid it if you post a corrected link to the pelicanparts listing.

I got my car with a non-working blower motor and did the Grainger motor fix. It cost me less than $30 for all the parts and only took about two hours. It was well worth the time and money, and $250 is way too much to buy a new one.

Totally agree about Pelican...support this site first....I don't think Pelican had one when I went looking. I will edit the post and PM me for another OEM vendor for the part if Wayne does not have one.

I found the ignition control box to be the source of the whine, I do not know why yet. If I find out anything, I'll post it
