NoVA gang help request!!!

FINALLY got my Dansk dual out...marked the proper cut lines on the rear valence and then checked out the bolts on the exhaust. RUSTED! I can't get them out or even loose. If I keep at it, there will be zero bolt head to turn. It already is a 12.5mm verus 13mm due to attempts.

So...

Who has done this before and can help get these three little bastards out and help cut a nice line in the valance to install the nice dual out?

Beer and cigar in it for you (okay...and me )

The sooner the better...you know how you get when you have a new part to install...

Sam, can you get to them with a Dremel and cutoff disks? I'm assuming that you've already gone beyond the point where wrenches will work for you.

I can probably cut them off...just have not done that before. Honestly, this is the oldest car I have ever had (former BMW junkie) and my first experience with rusted bolts. And you are totally right, wrenches ain't gonna get em off.

Plenty of room I think to attack them with a Dremel...guess I could stop by Sears.

Sam, a Dremel is an important part of your auto repair arsenel.

But next time, you should assume all exhaust system components will be held together by seized fasteners. Soak overnight with WD-40 or PB Blaster. Use 6-point sockets & wrenches if you have them. I think it's easier to slip / round off nuts and bolts using 12-pt tools. Finally, use anti-seize lubricant on the threads when you assemble these components so next time will be easier. Sorry for the long-winded response, Sam!

Enjoying the weather here?

Jim,
The weather here sucks! At least I got to go for a drive yesterday. Hey, what kinda Dremel cut off discs do you use? I have a B&D RTX tool and the cutt off discs always shatter and shoot off if I make the slightest wrong move. Are the true Dremels different?

I dunno Steve. I just pick up a bunch of them every so often from Home Depot or Lowes. When they wear down to little nubs or shatter, I just put a new one in and get right back to it.

Sam,

Try HEAT. I have an OXY/MAPP setup that may work if the bolts have some bite left. Shoot me a PM. I may be avail this evening.

Steve,

I know the cut off discs you are talking about and they stink. The 'good' discs are fibre reinforced and rarely break unless you really tweak them. They are also a bit more expensive ~$1/piece.

I second the Dremel with the fiber-reinforced disks. That's how I got mine off. I've got one if you'd like to borrow it.

Chris.
