I don't know that I think Ti is easy to work with, perhaps in the thinner sheets. It can be friction cut on a woodcutting bandsaw (fast speed) with an old dull blade. Don't breath the fumes. Don't let the powder catch on fire, brush it away. Here's a link, 6-4 is what you want.

6-4 will fracture when bent. This is an alloy but the exact alloy slips my mind at the moment. I made form dies in our R&D shop to bend Ti implants. Although the 6-4 is stronger.

How thick was the Ti? I've bent pieces thinner than 1/8" with out problems.

i was just skimming the pages, it didn't look like anyone said a whole lot about the welding process. I own a TIG welder,(welding for 9yrs, TIGing for about 7yrs) and am making several chromoly roll bars/cages with it. Titanium that thin requires a back flow gas(argon, argon+hydrogen, or helium). It would be easier if you had a chamber of gas or vacuum chamber because of the small size of the work peices. Titanium is like Stainless Steel, its very susceptible to the elements of you atmosphere and heat treatment. If not treated right, will break. Now how easy i do not know. As long as the post-flow is set high (how long the gas keeps comming out of the welding tip after you stop welding) and you KEEP the tip next to the metal, there should be not much of a problem. I know from welding chromoly and using stainless 304 rod, i need to purge (plumb an argon gas flow to the backside of the weld), and then use a heating torch to heat treat the welded area. i would assume that thin wall Stainless or Titanium would need the same purging treatment to the backside due to how hot the backside gets and would be otherwise be exposed to the atomosphere. Project looks awesome, that was one of the things on my list to make for some friends. Don.

Wow, those are really sweet looking, I've never seen them before.

Who sells these (obviously not Ti)?

These hinges will be .066" thick. The 6-4 we were bending was thinner. I think I may have to make the "U" shaped peice two seperate peices. I don't know if I can get that 180 degree bend with such a tight radius. The welding will be done by someone who knows their crap.(obviously not me) Thanks for the 3D models. I have just been hacking away at these during lunch. To make them in a machine would take longer because I would need to "disrupt" production.

Thrown hammer, you might be able to get the U tab made by taking a peice of metal with the width of the inner distance of the U tab, along with a jig of two parallel vertical peices of metal spaced and welded together... then you can lay the Ti U tab in flat form perpendicular across the vertical jig, and take the peice thats the inner width, and press the center of the Ti peice. The discription sucks... but check out the picture... its how i make throttle brackets for 3.2 coversions in 914's.

I can see the tight bends of the pivot might be tough. The other mild bends are what I've done and they bend easily. Cool project all the same.

A 3.2 in a 914....That could get me in trouble. That bending fixture is pretty slick. I am still plugging away. I hope to have a set done by the new year. I will keep you guys posted.
