Steering Wheel Removal

Simple task, remove the steering wheel. Not so simple, the 27 mm in torqued to 500 ft-lbs or more who knows, it is really tight. So the big question, when I crank on it with the cheater bar do I have the steering lock (ingition) disengaged? I'm assuming the answer is yes and should have the wheels turned all the way to the left to they hits the stops. Is the nut left or right thread?

Regular right hand thread, nothing special, just going to have to give it elbow grease.

Bill, righty tighty, lefty loosey. If you can use an air wrench, while holding on to the wheel, the nut will brake loose with out any problem. Craig

Don't use the steering lock to secure the wheel while you're trying to crack the nut loose...you'll bust it!

Long breaker bar, have a friend hold the wheel. If still too tight a air tool should do it......

HEY... my 5,0000th post.....

be careful that when the nut lets loose you don't put your hand and the breaker bar through the windshield.

One trick in 101 projects is to use one of those stupid steering wheel anti-theft locks "The Club" to hold the wheel

just did it last night. i actually sat in the seat and braced the steering wheel with my knees. one crank on the cheater bar loosened it! i guess all the leg squats did the trick. bcorp, you are going to EP? say hi, that is my hometown.

Yep. got two of them, we quail and Pheasant hunt. But mostly hunt in the Sacramento delta region.

As a follow on to this thread...is there something special about removing the horn pad? I have pulled on it pretty hard but it does not want to budge. Do I just yank harder? This is on an 88 coupe.
TIA

I used two hands & pulled hard straight off. There is a wire connected to it you'll need to unplug after you get it off.

i am with schrup. this is the most uncomfy thing i did. felt like i was going to break the thing. but the two hand approach is KING! just put two hand on one of the three pads at a time.
