904 at Hershey???
Anybody else see this 904? It was next to me in line as I was pulling in. Very cool. Didn't see it again though and couldn't verify if it was real or a repro. -- Curt

Nope, I never saw it. Maybe it was there for the hillclimb which was happening across the street from the parking lot ????

I saw it when it pulled in. If you walked in, it would have been on the left parking lot, the side with the NICE orange 911T. When It first pulled in, there was a large crowd gathering around. Very nice, don't know if it was real though.

It was cool to see this upon arriving at Hershey. We had a VERY long drive (9 hours or so) and didn't see a single Porsche until we hit Rte. 322 just west of Hershey!! After that, it was "all Porsche, all the time!"

I started seeing Porsches on I-81, I saw a 911, very nice pass me on the highway, but then I heard a loud "P O P", even when it was half a mile away I heard "P O P". That car was realy backfiring. I wouldn't drive my Porsche if it was like that, doesn't that damage the engine?

I saw it! I got some good footage of it on video camera but don't know how to upload onto a computer. I don't know if it was real or not, look great.
EDIT: it was parked at the farthest end, closest to the actual park. |

That's Dennis Frick's 904. You should know that Dennis is responsible for beginning the Central PA Swap many, many, many years ago. Today,Dennis is responsible for the Porsche Parade Competition Rules. I do not know the complete history on the car, but I have seen it on the track with vintage Porsches (50/50 at Watkins Glen in 1998).

Sheesh, you'd think they would cut the poor guy a break on the parking fee. He paid his $5 just like the rest of us!

I was so bummed that I missed that car. I had just packed up my stuff and was taking one one last walk arround when I heard that wonderful sound. I look to the left and saw it pulling out of the gates.

my wife and i (wearing pelican polos) were standing around the 904. we were taking pictures when dennis and some others walked up as well. the story seems to be that this 904 was built off of a 914-6 chassis. the only thing that even gave a clue were the seats which were shaped like regular 914 seats and not more like the 914-6 gt/ 904 seats. they did have the correct 904 fabric though... or maybe im wrong and 904s did have also seats shaped like 914s (non gt ).
anyway this was the nicest and most well built car i have wittnessed and it's not a kit either. it's pure porsche registered with pca, vintage racing and everything... THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE |

Dennis built that 904 from scratch from factory blueprints. He is an amazing guy and just a wealth of information. A real asset to PCA.

I first saw it in my rear view mirror - I'm in the blue cab right in front of him in the first pic. He parked right behind me, and I can tell you that he immediately drew a crowd. He also helped me find my car when it was time to go - all I had to do was look for the throng of admirers. (and I'm sure not talking about my ongoing "project").
Although I only spoke with Dennis(?) briefly, he seemed like a true gentleman, and I know that he spent a great deal of time answering the tons on questions about his car and sharing his experience/knowledge in general. As posted by 83 SC in Pa, Dennis said that he built it from scratch off of the factory blueprints. It is a truly beautiful car - if you missed it at Hershey this year - try to find it next time around. |

Has the car ever been featured in a magazine (if not, maybe it should be!)? I'd like to know the details on its construction. Does it have a proper 904 motor, for instance? -- Curt

I saw Beck testing a prototype 904 out here with a 993 motor in it about a month ago. Very nice.

I wonder what size tires Beck plans to use?! Certainly not stock. Seems like it would be difficult, at best, to put any power down with that kind of setup!!!! Anybody know what kind of price range Beck's looking at for a turn-key 904? I remember that outfit in the UK was getting $80K or so for their 904 repro. -- Curt

It was north of 280 hp, going into a 7:31 transaxle, and it weighed 1600 pounds. He had street tires on, but they weren't stock sizes. I'd guess they were at least 275's in the rear. He was just testing, at a Vintage racing event, when I saw it -- but he said it made very short work of prepped Vipers on the track, even with the street rubber. The one I saw, at least, was less a historical duplication than it was a kind of 'ultimate version' of the 904 concept. In my opinion, that's a great way to go -- at least until Porsche starts making 1600-pound cars with that kind of power.
What I've heard is that it's going to be about a $70,000 proposition as a turn-key kit (although I'm relying only on my memory for that). Not as affordable as the 550, but a lot more capable.

Frick made that 904 up from the 914 pan to qualify for pca club racing is what I heard. he does 904 resto's. The other replica 904 is built over in England. And Beck had plans to widen the 904 chassis for his replica. I was on the track of a 904 body for duplication purposes, ran out of steam and $ ...
