Help with Starting Problems...Please

So I purchased my 1977 911S about 3 weeks ago. At the time the car was running rough when the car was starting and would miss when I reved it up. When I mean running rough, when starting the car the RPM's would pulse and almost die and then rev high and then almost die and it would do that until it warmed up. Consequently if you pushed the gas down when starting the car would bog or the gas pedal would have no effect. The transporter said something about that he thought he fouled the plugs when he was getting it on the truck. I drove the car about 3 miles from where it was dropped off to my house and it ran well.
So after these hard starting problems I decided to change the plugs, a whole other fiasco, but I got cylinders 2-6 done and I am waiting on a tool to get cylinder 1 spark plug replaced. In addition I checked the points while I was doing ignition stuff and they were set correctly. I decided to try starting the car and the car will turn over but it will not run. At first I thought it was the fuel pump so I bled my CIS system; with the key in the "on" position I pushed up the arm in the CIS system and I heard the fuel pump go on and the injectors spraying fuel into the cylinders. After that I went to start the car and I could hear it fire up and almost start, more that usual, but then it died. In addition there is also fuel in the tank, made sure of that one. So now I am stuck. The only thing I have not checked is that I am getting spark but since then car ran before I must assume that it will turn out fine. I plan on checking the spark ASAP anyway. Any ideas where I should look? I could really use some help because I am running out of ideas. Thanks alot.
David

What are your plugs gapped to? When did you last replace the spark plug wires?

David,
I had a chronic cold starting problem and went through all kinds of troubleshooting until it was doscovered that the plugs were gapped too wide and the wires were bad. The other things we checked were:

- vacuum leaks
- cold start valve
- Warm Up Regulator
- rotor, dist cap and Pertronix
- engine harness wiring
- fuel pump and lines
- Fuel pressure and fuel distributor
- leaky airbox

I think I might have found my problem talking through with my friend. I recently removed my smog pump and I havent gotten around to plugging it yet. I just removed the pump and I am planning on just plugging the hose that used to be pluged into the smog pump. Anyone have any experience with this...Do you think this is going to solve the problem? I will give an update when I get home from work.

When I removed the pump I used a leaking rubber boot.. made no difference if the seal was on or off

So now the next phase in the starting problems begin. The problem that I was describing was that I had a temporary lapse of cognitive thought when I decided I didnt need to plug the smog pump hose after I removed the smog pump. Put the smog pump back on and fixed that problem right up. Now I have a different issue...of course. I start the car and it sounds healthy and then it reves up to 2k rpms and then just dies within 5 seconds or starting. Any ideas? Looks like I am in the market for the CIS fuel pressure guage. Thanks for your help.
