A/C Expansion Valve

Over the summer I attempted to have my A/C recharged because it wasn't as "cool" as it should be. (In FL, marginal A/C is still better than no A/C at all). My local wrench advised that my A/C expansion valve was not working properly. The part required replacement. I passed on the replacement of the vlave due to my amp system had to be R&I. (I hate to pay a shop 3 hours what I can do in 1 hour).

I have all ready converted the the cooling system from the R12 coolant to the R134a. I have successfully replaced the expansion valve.

The part was covered with a black tar-like substance. Sticky, but easily removed. Is this normal? If this is normal, what is the stuff? Do I have to recoat the part once I recharge the A/C system?

Happy Holidays. Thanks in advance for your help.

Mook, my guess would be the 'tar' prevents condensation from forming and dripping into the enclosure. I would try and replace it with something, even if some similar 'tar' from a caulking tube (Home Depot). I was able to salvage most of mine and simply recoated the valve area.
Good luck,

I could be wrong but I think the tar like substance is the sealing compound for the hole that the expansion valve mounts to/thru?
