3.6 transplant exhaust report...

Well, after much experimentation and $, I decided not to reinvent the wheel. I installed B&B headers (I have heat now!) and after loads of trial and error, I settled on a Dynomax Super Turbo crossflow muffler.

The installation is clean. (I'll post pictures later), but the sound is fantastic! At idle, it is low and rumbly. Not as tinny as a GHL and not as raspy as a Flowmaster. The idling sound level is a bit louder than stock, but you can carry on a normal conversation both in and outside the car. The idle tone is deep and nice. At 3,500 RPM something changes. The engine starts to howl. The calm but menacing low idle tones are replaced by a torrid wail that sets your hair on fire and sends the old folks running for cover. The sound reminds me of a P51 Mustang at full throttle on takeoff. OK. It's not really that loud. It's significantly quieter than a dual out GHL or Flowmaster, but the music is beautiful to my ears.

Also, the new exhaust fixed all my idle issues. On a downside, I was unable to fit Thom's carbon fiber RS tube even with the 964 shroud duct. Couldn't clear the distributors. I let the mechanic have a shot and he couldn't get it done either. Now it is in pieces and useless. Has anyone successfully mounted this heat tube on a 993? Pictures?

Anyway, all things considered, it's a great day!

Good job. And welcome to the crowd of those who caved into B&B.

BTW, if anyone has one of the heater tubes that runs along the bottom to the headers just sitting in their garage let me know.

I'll be dealing with this in the coming days. With luck, the car should be home by the weekend with 3.6 V-ram installed. All wiring and electronics went in yesterday and engine and tranny were supposed to go in today. AC and oil cooler will follow. Will try the cat-only option first. I suspect that'll be too loud and the custom fab will begin (using stock HE's).

Since I'm about to become a card carrying member of the 3.6 conversion club, it seems we should have a name or something. Heck we've got the almost defunct SCWDP, a Gruppe for almost every letter in the alphabet, etc., but what should those of us who've done 3.6 conversions be called (besides broke)?

No, but I have a slick little cat conversion option. (test-pipe tailpipe! )

Moses, I might have missed it but did you ever post any pictures of this setup? Have you had it dyno'd?

Why doesn't the RS heater tube clear the dizzies? Lots of guys on Rennlist have done this and I had planned to do so soon. Is there a qual. control issue here?

Moses I gave into the B&B thing early, I ordered a complete Ghl and after being told 3 months i canceled, i then found a set of used exhaust right here, (its stainless doesnt rust) anyway, I opened up the single out to dual out, i could not stand to drive the car, after reading jacks ordeal with the same problem i too went to 2.5 inch tail pipes, now I can drive the car and hold a conversation with a passenger, if I were to order a new B&B set up i would order small tail pipe and viola done, Kevin
