Which exhaust whould you recommend for an 88

Thinking about going with Fabspeed and the bypass pipe. Also interested in the B&B. Any others and what seemed to be the exhaust of choice without too much resonance.

Also, is the cat bypass pipe a good idea. I am not worried about emissions, do not have to be inspected where I live, and the car is mainly a garage queen in case emission issues arise.

A '74 set of HE's and muffler ...

Or, the modern equivalent by SSI & Dansk!

If emissions aren't a concern, I'd jump all over a set of SSI's as Warren indicates. I need to move to a small, emissions-exempt city!

I have ssi's and a Dansk 2/1 stainless muffler. Fit and sound are great with no issues with resonance or noise. Looks like it came with the car.

Depends on how much $$ you want to spend and the sound you want to have. The SSI's are great but removing the cat and putting in a bypass pipe will get you about the same performance gains. You won't get the great sound of the SSI's/sport muffler combo but you'll only spend a couple hundred dollars.
I have a Fabspeed premuffler installed on my 87. I dyno'd before and after and gained 8HP. If I had to do it over again, I'd put in the Dansk pre-muffler that you can now buy from Pelican. Fabspeed had some fit issues a while back. Do a search. There a long, long threat on the whole Fabspeed/Dansk thing.

W/o doing cams at the same time the SSI will only give volume improvements this is good but not ideal. You can get the same benefit in flow volume by installing a euro pre-muffler(or aftermarket copy) and free flow muffler, at far less expense and hassle.

If you go to some cams w/ more overlap, then the tuned lengths of the SSIs will be bemneficial and worth while. None of the modern smog motors has enough overlap to really take advantage of exhaust tuning. This has been shown time and again on dynos(despite manufacturers claims to the contrary)

Thanks for the great responses. What agout GHL. They have some pretty high gain claims. They something like 12 + hp at the wheels. Is this possible and are there better gains on the 3.2. If they are better gains, what could I reasonably expect a far as RWHP with another system.

I have the Dansk Euro Pre-Silencer (think cat bypass) $250 and a GHL 1 in 2 out with 3" tips $850. Installed myself, but paid $70 to have a local muffler shop cut the EXTREMELY rusted stubborn bolts off the old exhaust and replace with new ones and you have to buy some gaskets. Install is really pretty easy.

Sound is louder than stock, but not obnoxious. You can hear the stereo and radar detector and have a conversation with no problem. Keeping the car at 2500 to 3000 rpm sounds nice but not too loud. However, when you wanna put your foot in, the sound is very aggressive and gets a nice increase with authority.

(Fun to tap the pedal next to a ricer and give him a little wake up call).

In an effort to significantly reduce back pressure behind the turbo - custom 911SC Turbo and lower spool up RPM, I have searched all over for aftermarket "proven" mufflers for the 930 that can be adapted for the SC.
Preference are a dual outlet with some minor mods to the rear valence - passenger side.

research led to:

1. Stock 930 muffler
2. GLH 4" dual outlet
3. BB 4.5# twin outlet
4. Fabspeed 4.5" twin outlet

Today saw a GHL with very bad welds being fitted on a customer car at Kelly Moss. KM people not impressed with fitment or welds of the GHL. ?? Is this pervasive or single incident?

Today spoke with Fabspeed about their 4.5 twin where the left (driver side) is the wastegate and the right (passsenger side) is the turbo exhaust. They are "sold" on this straight thru design versus those that reverse (GHL) a portion of the flow back to the left outlet inside the muffler.

BB: found many service and warranty complaints in this forum via "search".

So it looks like a Fabspeed is in my future. Will be modifiing/changing the muffler inlet flange to accomodate 76mm.

Have not ordered yet. Anyone with bad experience on Fabspeed?

Here is a picture of the Fabspeed dual out. Really a single right out with a separate wastegate pipe on the left.

I have the Fabspeed pre-muff and a Mille Miglia 1 in and 1 out sport muff on my 84. It sounds fantastic. The only doen side is that the tip on the muffler is freakin ugly-- the rest of the muffler is made like jewerly.

GHL has the best customer service IMHO. Great sound and no resonance too. I had a 1in 1out on my SC, but I got tired of the look of the muffler hanging below my rear valance. If I had it to do over again I would go with a Dansk.

IMHO, I love the B&B system on my 87 3.2 The sound is still Porsche but with more authority, performance is nice and it also helps keep the temp down. I can't wait til I install the Steve Wong chip (I just picked up) that was programed for B&B SSI and 92+ octane. Steve was great.

Sorry 89911, I hate to ask a stupid question, but. Do you say you have a Dansk 2 in and 1 out stainless muffler? That is the exact set up I'm looking for but I can not find anyone who sells Dansk 2 in 1 out mufflers. Did you use a setup for a '73 or am I just confused.

Thanks for your time.

No problem. The SSI-Dansk setup is the same as the early 70 style heat exchanger-muffler. I bought the Dansk with the the polished stainless finish and a larger tip. They should not be hard to find and I would think Pelican sell them. The muffler looks identical to a typical 73 muffler that came originally.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply.
I could not find that muffler listed here at Pelican, but I did find it in the newest Performance Prod. So there is no size issues with using a 65-73 muffler on an '89? This info makes me feel much better about my options. If you ever find a photo of your set up I sure would like to see it.

Thanks again

I had Pelican special order my Dansk and they had the best price too. I went with the single in/single out, with a Fabspeed pre-muff, since this set up has about 80% of the flow of a two in/out system. Unless you are going to be at high RPM's all the time, the cost is prohibitve. Get a Steve Wong chip too, it was my best performance mod on my 87.
