Pedal cluster roll pin question

How do you tell if the roll pin in my pedal cluster is bad or about to break?

The reason I ask is I replaced the clutch cable and helper spring yesterday on my 86, and I still experience a bit of grinding. It's adjusted as per factory specs, but the clutch doesn't seem to engage untill about 1/2-3/4" from the floor board.

Once I finished hooking up the clutch cable at the pedal end (BTW my hands look like I was in a knife fight, without a knife), I pressed it with my hand a few times. It looks like I'm not getting much movement of the cable in the first half of the pedal throw. Is this common?

Go ahead and pull the rugs. Take the floor board out. Vacuum out the area where the pedal assembly is located. You will be able to answer your own question.

If you have to replace the roll pin, run a piece of wire through it and twist it to secure it. It keeps the roll pin in place, if it fractures, you might make it home!

Good luck,

David are you saying that I will be able to see if the little bugger is backing out, or broken?

Sounds like a great idea to safety wire it.

Matt,

That roll pin was replaced by the PO when he rebuilt the pedal cluster. Ask me how I know :p

They tend to last.

But to test this, take a look at the lever arm (other end of the pedal cluster) that the clutch cable attaches to. When you push the pedal down, the lever arm should move in lock step - no slippage.

Try securing the lever arm in place, by wedging a screwdriver into it. Then push on the pedal and see if it slips. Try in both directions.

I had a roll pin failure in my '77 and that was the proof.

Thanks Chuck! I was going to call you, but I always hate bothering you with questions.

I also think that particular roll-pin is tapered.... so it goes out easy from one side only....and a real b*tch if you hammer away from the opposite side by mistake.
Correct ?

If you are in doubt of the strength of the roll pin...use a spiral roll pin instead.
They have multiple layers of steel instead of only 1 turn.

Thanks guys for all the replies. It's not the roll pin. As Chuck said, he replaced that along with the bushings when he owned the car (It's so nice knowing the PO of your car, and knowing that they took care of it). Upon inspection, I'm getting full pedal movement.

The problem goes away after about 20 minutes of driving, and if I drive it everyday, it seems to be non-existant.
