Thoughts on a car I looked at?
Looked at a 1976 911, that has been modified with a 1985 3.2 ROW engine, SC flares put on. Nice red paint, has 7 & 8.
The engine had 20,000 miles when it was put in and only about 20,000 put on it. What do you think it is worth, drove great. |

Well, that's hard to say, market value is probably in the $4K-$10K range depending upon the overall shape of the car.
If it has been cared for and the 3.2L swap was done well it should make a great car assuming the body and interior are in great shape.

$4K????? Is not a good running 3.2L worth 125% of that number alone?

$15k if its perfect. Sounds like the guy has put a lot of time and money into the car. This is exactly the type of car to look for, IMHO. If everything checks out good on a PPI it could be a great find. A 3.2 runner on a pallet is going to cost $5500 easily. Get a PPI before you make an offer. Good luck!

I agree with you guys, the motor is worth more than 4K, but often the parts are worth more separate than together. The '74-'77 cars have the stigma that reduces their value, so that often one that is fixed up is still going for less than it should. Also, I gave the range because if it is a repaint there could be other considerations (rust, body damage, etc...)
The car could be worth 15K, but still not sell for more than 10 or 12, especially considering the market right now. Shoot, you can pick up SC's for less than 10K, and they are fully galvanized.

I would take a bunch of pics & post them before you decide. The people on this board can extract amazing details from them. Especially good pics of the engine swap, they'll be able to tell you if it's a hack job or not.

Good advice, the more detail we get the better the estimate we can give.

The car has a strong working a/c, not something I need in Orange County, what can I sell that for?

That car could be a terrific bargain if its in the 10k range or less in my opinion - and of course if a PPI checks out ok.
1976 was the first year of galv. body. It's much lighter than a stock SC. It has a low bluebook value which will help you in insurance and taxes. A 3.2 in that car makes it very quick and fun to drive. That said, you have to be very carefull and take a close look at the car. If the conversion was done well, and all other areas of the car have been gone through by a competent mechanic, it will be great and you could have a reliable, very quick car. If it was hacked, you can easiely spend more on fixes than you pay for the car. Make sure it has a carrera oil cooler, look at wiring harness for poor wire connections (a sure sign of a hack mechanic).

I'd say the big ass dent in the back would put a serious hurt on the price & could be a reflection of how it's been treated. Any pics of the interior?

If rest of car is good including interior, I think it's worth about $12K.
that said, be wary of pieced together cars. there's a story lurking in there somewhere.

My bad, in the pics you posted it looked as if there was a large dent in the rear qaurter behind the left wheel. Looks good on the link, but I wouldn't give more than $12.5 for it. Good luck.

This car is very pieced-together, with a Carrera steering wheel, '87-89 front valance, and who knows what else. Hard to tell from the pictures, but are the rockers just the original rockers that have been bent, or are they SC rockers? Little details like that tell you if the P.O. was into cutting corners.
The right rear wheel isn't filling up the flare quite as well as the left wheel does, it seems to me... This is, IMHO, a $9500 car at best -- and that only after a good PPI.

I am not an expert, but I just sold my 1979 911SC. So I have a good idea what the market is like. If your not hung up on the fact that it is a 1976, I think that it looks like a very nice P-Car.
Guards red with tan interior is a very desirable combination. The interior looks very clean. The car may have parts from various years but it does not looked a pieced-together, backyard project. The engine swap looks clean (of course I am doing all this judging from pictures) I would see if the sellers have the receipts on the swap. The 3.2 is a nice upgrade and it appears to be a low mileage engine. The transmission should be trouble-free for many miles. If YOU like the car, looks-wise and mechanically (I do) I would make an offer. If the PPI comes out okay and the paint is as nice as it looks in the pictures I think it is worth $12-$13k. If you bought a 1976 or an SC you would spend major dollars to end up with something that nice and with the 3.2 motor.

Looks like a pretty nice car. If you feel good about it, get a good independent PPI. Start deducting the things it needs from the asking price and form an offer from there.
Good luck! |
