Any Chicagoland 911 for sale that you know of?
I'm in the market to buy a 911 between about 1978-1987. Anyone have any good leads or know anyone selling a good car? I want to spend less than about $17,500 hopefully. Also does anyone know a good shop in the western suburbs of chicago to get a PPI?

Chicago PCA advertising mart:
http://www.pca-chicago.org/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.pl?session_key=&search_and_display_db_button=on&query=subcategory&category=Automobiles&subcategory=Porsche+911&results_format=headlines Also see their monthly magazine, "Chicago Scene." Fischer Motors usually has copies, and also has Porsche ads on its bulletin board.

My car is in Arizona, but it CAME from Chicago? Does that count? It's a super car. Your Pelican discount would cover shipping!

For the PPI, check out Midwest Eurosport in Bensenville. Ask for Brian. They are an all Porsche shop, with an extensive following from the racing crowd. Top notch.

Hey Squirrel Man...
Being a Chicago native and now a "displaced yankee" living in Atlanta, I can tell you with confidence that the numbers of 911's down here are only exceeded by California. Do yourself a favor, get a hold of a sunday Atlanta Journal Constitution and check out the dozen or two 911's in your age range that are: 1) southern cars - no salted roads down here, 2) probably owned by Peachstate P-nuts, and/or maintained by the best collective of P-mechanics on this side of the Mississippi. When I was in Chicago a few months ago, I was amazed how few 911's I encountered and I was looking! The whopping three or four I noticed were new. If your shopping for a 911, unfortunately you may have to go beyond your locality to get a good car at a good price. Look into the south and west...............the real fun is flying out and driving it home.............at least you know they were not exposed to copius quantities of salt in the winter. I can help you out with any pre-inspection info. relative to great shops and service down here. Regards Bob 73.5T |

Squirrelman, welcome to best Porsche board/info/help site there is.
Check out collectorcartraderonline.com there is about 170 for sale in Illinois listed there today. Also as 'Sunroof' recommends you can go to the Atlanta paper online at AJC.com and peruse the want ads. Anyone in the Savannah area seen a grey/silver 505 running around? I've seen it twice in the last week and was just wondering - Looks good. |

Thanks for all the replys guys. While i would love to buy one out of state just for the chance to drive it home, unfortunatly i dont know how to drive a manual transmission yet. I have friends that will teach me but they dont have cars with manual transmissions and i couldnt find anyone that rented them to use that to learn on. So that has left me with having to buy the car and then learn on it once I get it. Thanks again guys, i cant wait to truely join the club.

squirrelman,
There is a nice group of Pelicans in your area. I work next door in Woodridge! The selection outside of our area is much better. Listen to these guys. I'll be happy to drive your car to Illinois for you. "Have heavy right foot, will travel!" A fellow came to our last Pelican/Rennlist event who has an 85 Carrera that he talked about selling. If you are serious I can put in in contact with him. He may or may not be selling, but it's worth a try. I also recall seeing an ad in the "Scene" for an SC with turbo flares that didn't sound bad. Or you can buy my car for $17,500 ![]() ![]() |

Don't forget Cars.com I just checked and there's an '83 w/ 74,297mi for $15,980 at the Autobarn, Evanston; and a private ad in the city for a '82 SC w/ 47K miles for $14,500.
A friend of mine bought his SC this summer just searching autotrader, and cars.com. I live in the city, so if you need someone to check out a car with you anywhere around this area please let me know. Alot of guys in the city are willing to negotiate on price to keep from paying another winter of parking rental at $150++ per month. I also have my engine out of my car (almost put back together), so if there's anything you want to learn about these cars, drop me a PM, as it's a good time to see the engine, and various parts. I assure you, I won't try to put you to work. Good luck!

squirl,
i bought my car from a guy near cincinnati because of this board. drove it home absolutely petrified gettin passed by little old ladies in toyotas for the first hour... only to budy up with a 964 for the second half of the drive with a grin that stuck on my face for days. i had a tough time finding the exact car that i wanted in chicago. you might just have to expand your search area a little, rely on p-heads to help with the initial overview... suggest a ppi shop, et cetera. it wouldn't suprise me if a local pcar nut volunteered to go pick it up with you or caravan to go get it. don't know what your situation is... but learn to drive a stick first. go test drive some cars, even if they aren't exactly what you want to get a feel for them... drive a 915 and a g-50... et cetera. -bernie

Hey Squirrel,
You can see the ads from PCA chicago on the PCA chicago web site http://www.pca-chicago.org/ go to the area called "Scene" and you can see the monthly magazine with ads in the back. The cars tend to be a bit more expensive, but are probably better maintained. I'm right in DG too, welcome to the board. Ed '92 C2 Cab |

Having grown up in Chicago and now living in sunny SoCal (went to the beach today!) I would suggest that you look for a car out here and have it shipped back (or get a cheap flight and drive it back). The weather out here is so easy that cars are in great condition compared to the ones you get back in the snow belt. There are quite a few nice cars to find out here for the price range you are shopping in. Just check out Autotrader (www.autotrader.com) and use the 92121 area code as the starting point. You should get a bunch of nice ones.
If there is something in particular that you would want looked at, I could probably go over and see it for you and see if it looked OK. Shipping from California to Chicago is about $1000. There are a couple of good shops you could take it to in San Diego for a PPI (a definite must). I am sure that you could do something similar in the LA area with a LA pelicanhead. Rich Murphy

Squirrelman,
Napleton Porsche in Westmont has a nice 82-930. I bet they would part with it for 20-22. It has about 75K on it and I think it needs a voltage regulator. May be worth looking into. I would also recommend looking into the cars in the left coast. Mine came from Southern Cal and is rust free. Definitely worth the additional cost and hassle to have a clean chassis. I doubt I will ever buy a rust belt car again.

Thanks for the heads up, i have actually already talked to them at napleton about that car. I found them to be a total pain to try to deal with. I wouldnt pay 20-22k for that car either, they dont have EPA or DOT certs. for it.

Keep your options open and look everywhere. I found my 993 by word of mouth from a friend of my dads - one owner Florida car with 32K miles. I found my 951 on cars.com - it was a also a one owner car from Wisconsin. One way plane flights are very cheap, get there for the PPI, and drive or ship the car home. steve

Here's one, a '79 911 coupe: http://www.midwestperformancecars.com/inventory/detail.asp?adid=2093
I'm not affiliated with them but a coworker's brother bought a 951 from them and is very happy with it. That front spoiler/valance is a little over-the-top for my tastes, though, and I don't get the mirrors. My personal pick in your price range would be a car that was posted to Rennlist's public boards today: a Guards Red 911SC lightweight. Here's the text of his ad: Quote:

Squirrelman, be open to shopping the nation for your car. Buying one from the dry South or West has many advantages. I searched for a year before finding mine in Houston. The condition of the car was well worth the shipping cost, IMO.
