How much $$$ to rewire guages
I've been putting this off, but it needs to be done. All of my guages work fine, but the wires that attach them are worn with a lot of insulation chipping. I'd hate to have a dash fire back there.
Anyway, this is a job I despise. If it's made out of wood or requires a wrench I'm all over it ...electical stuff - well it's not my thing. Any idea how much it would cost to have done. I'll be shopping for estimates on Monday. I thought I'd run it past you guys first. Jeff C

You're silence has shamed me into attempting this myself. With any luck ( short honey do list) I'll have the windshield and dash out today to get a better look at the situation.
What diameter wire is used for the gauges? If I can patch it together I will, otherwise I found a vendor that can supply the complete harness. It's far from cheap though. Any help on the type of wire and where to purchase would be very much appreciated. Jeff C

Every wire in a 911 is color-coded and can be identified on the wiring diragram that matches what you see on the car. There is a LOT to be said for putting in a stock wiring harness.
If you do not color-code the wiring behind the guages, you will have to spend a month of Sundays figuring out how to identify all the wires, so that when you remove one of the guages you will be able to get it hooked up correctly again. Good luck! |

Jeff,
I have gotten several old wiring looms out of wrecked cars in the past. I use them for replacing worn out bits and like the color code to match. You might try looking at wrecking yards and find one where YOU can pull the old harness out yourself. I would not buy one that someone has done it themselves as wire cutters tend to be used in some areas and thats not what you want. That said, the wiring loom is bound to be about the same age as yours and could be in the same condition unless your car has been sitting outside at sometime. I might look for a 83 SC harness as I believe that anything 84 or newer might be different. Not sure but there were some other changes (DME for fuel injection) that could have changed the wiring harness. Joe
