it is a rare SC that still has the original clutch. No time for a PPI? Well, there's a butt for every seat, and there's always another car to buy...

onewhippedpuppy 01-05-2004 05:02 AM

I think that most of us on this board are basically obsessed with our cars, or maybe that's just me :D , but I think that sometimes skews the maintenance numbers up a little bit. I know that on my T, 75% of the stuff I plan to do I could go without, I'm just constantly striving to make the car better. Of course, there's still that other 25%. Ebay scares me too, but it is a good way to find cars. Remember, just because you find a car on ebay, doesn't mean you have to buy it on ebay. Just so the money's green, most people will sell their car outside of ebay, so just use it for your shopping, then contact them and make your own deal.

Mike Kast 01-05-2004 07:05 AM

It's the things that I don't plan to do that give me the grief. But when your rim gets bent and your tie rods are in shambles you have to do something. New front suspention and while its apart, restore the wheel wells and pan! It wasn't part of the short term plan... Oh yea... I can't do the front shocks and leave the backs...

Matt my so called "Ebay" is not done yet, the seller has yet to refund me the 2 deposits i made to him. He even agreed in writing to refund me the deposits, its a good thing i kept all emails, paid with credit. We will see what happens with this....Mike thanks for the posts but its sounds like you bought a car that needed more work then you wanted.

JdBuyer 01-05-2004 04:27 PM

I don't know? More work than I expected would be more acurate. I really do enjoy it. I just didn't expect it.
Its an old car and I drive it hard, I guess I should expect to have to work.
But thanks for making me think about that. I shouldn't whine so much...
I love that car...

singpilot 01-05-2004 05:03 PM

Hmmmm. A cab? A Targa?

I commute to Las Vegas from Los Angeles in my '80 Coupe. No wind noise, no targa top noise, A/C works flawlessly, and after I did the Carrera cooler and fan, no cooling problems except in stop and go on the hottest days in Vegas (+105F), then the A/C comes off. No leaks when it rains. No body squeaks in the twisties. Great sound system, XM for the desert reception. Front brake cooler scoops, pressure tensioners, Gel batt, all the mods. This car has never stranded me, and I drive it pretty much every day.

Don't pass up a good coupe if you find one.

Ah ha! The most dangerous words in any Porsche owner's vocabulary, "and while it's apart" . That is your problem my friend, that's why I'm not taking apart many parts of my car until I have many thousands in reserve. Fender, sorry to hear of your Ebay troubles, that's what scares me in the first place. Use ebay to find a car near you that you can go look at, don't put down any money until you PPI. Now you're stuck trying to get back money from someone in a different city/ state, lots of hassle and you still may not succeed. Don't get in a rush, there's always another good deal, and if it looks too good to be true, it is. It's a buyers market out there, be picky.

FenderGuy 01-05-2004 05:39 PM

SingPilot yes a targa or a cab. I think driving the 914 made me enjoy that type of car, now the cab well thats a differnet story I just like that feel a lot better. A coupe just doesnt do it for me, I drive a coupe a coupe now and even thou its not a porsche i dont want another coupe. Thanks Jdbuyer that silver cab looks very good..i have emailed them on that car, but what troubles me is they just did a visual inspection they told that there is a porsche dealership 2 blocks away and qouted me a price of $85 for a PPI? Seems kinda low, but they said if I called and made a appointment they would gladly take the car over for a PPI. Matt I think i am in bette shape them most who get jerked around on Ebay, I am realizing this seller was jerking me around on his shet car, and lucky for me he didnt fix the car or else I would have ended up with that piece of garbage. Ebay is really worthless when it comes to these matters, and a buyer must fend for themselves. What I have against this seller is i paid these deposits with my credit cards, a written letter signed from the seller stating he would bear all costs to fix the car, deliver the car to me, or else he would cancel the auction. Emails from the seller stating he would refund me my deposits of the car was not ready to roll on saturday(1/3/04). Proof of misrepresentation of the auction, by emails from the seller stating trans leak, engine with wrong carbauration...I have soild proof on this matter, most that do business on Ebay dont realize that Ebay will jack you if you get ripped off. Ive already called my credit card companies on this matter and when i send them the proof, i doubt this seller will get away with this. I think i will be ok. The real kick is this seller claims to be a lawyer in california, what sane lawyer would try to rip you off, with proof from the buyer that the seller did? it males no sense to me, i will let the credit companies fight for me on this..

Is this a trick question?

I'll say d) All of them.

Except my wife and the guys on Pelican who are JDs...

FenderGuy 01-05-2004 06:13 PM

nostatic get the answer correct but i mean really how stupid is this seller? signed paper stating he would cancel auction and refund deposits, i have emails saying he would refund me my money of the car was not ready to roll on 1/3/04. does he reall think he is going to keep my money when the credit card companies get the proof i send them? Easy money right!

FenderGuy 01-05-2004 06:14 PM

lets talk about that silver 911?http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...item=2452343795 is this worthy ?

FenderGuy 01-05-2004 06:15 PM

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...item=2452343795 ok now that better

FenderGuy 01-05-2004 06:16 PM

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=10156&item=24 52343795 ok now it works jeez

nostatic 01-05-2004 06:20 PM

that looks like a clean car, but pictures can lie like a rug. Somebody needs to lay their hands on the car, and it needs a ppi.

Also, make sure you can live with burgundy interior. That's one reason for a slightly lower price.

I know i want a SC model and I know what updates to look for such as newer type studs, pop off valve, carrera tensioners. I know the Sc is the best model for around the price i am looking for. I would also like to know what the yearly cost of owning a 911. This car will be owned in the Arizona state so heat is major concern i have as these cars are air cooled. Any thing i should look, any fellow Sc owners share your likes experiences. Thanks all...Frank
I think I'd be remiss if I didn't at least suggest you try a 944 or 928S/928S4; you can get concourse versions of those cars for the price of a decent 911, and there are nice 944 turbos in that range as well.

That out of the way, I'd say an 80-82 911SC targa would fit the bill nicely for your price range and climate. I'd avoid dealers and try to find a member of the Porsche community; shopping for 2 Porsches, I'm amazed at what the guys out of touch with the Porsche community don't know about maintaining/repairing their cars. The 944 I just bought needs a few simple fixes that could have been completed in a sunny weekend or with a few hundred bucks on eBay, and the seller had no idea.

nostatic what dont you think burgundy interior is manly? lol i can live with it , i doubt that price will stay that low it still has 3 days to go. The carfax does check out as a 1 car owner, the car is from texas i think it has decent milage for a 20 year old car. But i am debating if i should bid on the car, its the color i want. Prestige Imports in San Antonio, Texas is selling the car and emailed me they would glady take the 911 te porsche dealership which is 2 blocks away from them, to get a PPI if i wanted.

FenderGuy 01-05-2004 06:47 PM

sorry i am not a big fan of the 944s, i would rather get another 914 lol

epbrown 01-05-2004 06:58 PM

No biggie - lots of people aren't, but I don't think we mention the alternatives enough on the 911 board and wanted to cover the bases. The silver Carrera you're eyeing looks decent, and if they're willing to do a PPI that says they're pretty confident about its condition. If you don't like the burgundy interior, I'd think swapping in a black one wouldn't be too expensive. The front seats are easy, the world's crawling with pristine rear 911 seats, and a carpet kit and door panels are available from our host.

nostatic 01-05-2004 06:59 PM

you should post asking if anyone in San Antonio can take a look at the car, and have the PPI done. You could bid if you get an agreement where the sale is contingent on a clean PPI.

If you want a cab, then you should get a cab. If the color is right, full speed ahead.
