Car not starting?

Replaced fuel pump and could not get pressure high enough. Noticed when I turned the key to start car pressure was fine just not fine when in auxillary postion. Drove car and noticed leak. Fixed leak and blew relay. Replaced relay and car will still not start. Battery reads 12 volts. Starter turns and I think fuel plump is working but maybe not. When jumping fuel pump with a wire the pump runs. When I first tried to start the car after fixing the leak from fuel pump I forgot to tighten the battery terminals and I think this caused the car not to start. Is it possible that the discharging of battery ruined it and I need a new battery. One other thing I noticed is that the pump sounds alittle differen't when I try to start the car. When I jummp it with the wire it sounds fine just differne't when I try and start car. What do you think is wrong?

What year and type of engine that is now in the car would help.

Could you have reverse the cables on your battery?

No chance of reversing the cables. Also car is a 1978sc. Car stopped starting after I reattached the fuel pump after finding a leak. What I could have done and I know this did happen is that I didn't have the calbes tight on the battery when I tried to restart it and I think I drained the battery. Also I could have shorted something with the gassoline at the fuel pump wires. But I am able to jump the fuel pump at the relay. the starter turns but I'm not sure if the fuel pump is comming on. Maybe I have some kind of short with the ignition and fuel pump wires now. Is it possilbe that I shorted a fuse with between the ignitin and fuel pump. Does something exist inbetween the two?

when you flip the ignition on, can you hear the fuel pump? you should hear a bunch of buzzing coming from the fuel pump area. there is no denying the noise a pump can make. at least on my car. if not, get under there and have someone turn the ignition on. just turn the ignition on, dont turn the starter. DID you bleed the fuel system after monkeying around with the fuel pump? if not, that may be your problem. do you know how? you take the air cleaner box off, and when you flip the ignition on, you push up on the air sensor plate until you hear your injectors spray. there is a hum to the injectors. it buzzes, from a tiny valve vibrating inside each injector. once bled try again.

Like unfixed said, are you sure you are getting fuel to the injectors? Are you sure the relay you replaced was replaced with a known good one?

There is a positive and negative wire to the fuel pump, reversing the wires, like any dc motor could cause the fuel pump to run backward, in other word not pumping gas as designed.

$hit.. what a logical thought.
No fuel flow thru pump = dry pump = trashed pump
