head job
after driving the shxt out of my 87 carrera with 85,300 miles and changing chips with steve w. my car is starting to smoke! I might
be in the market for a valve job and what ever ought to be done while" I'm in there". I have a guy here, for r & r but ,want to kno who is the best with heads? No porting. just blue print head rebuild without the boutique bull shxt while the engine is out, Suggestions from my Pelican brothers for the right other stuff. With a new valve job and 10,000 miles every 3 years at my age of 53 I will never have to rebuild the bottom end anyway. Keith Epperly 87 slant nose turbo lokk carera cabriolet |

Have you checked the plugs or done a leak-down test? It might be wise to check out a few things before you rip the heads off.

I just picked up my heads from Walt @ Comeptition Engineering. I couldn't belive that those were mine when he showed them to me....He has done an absolutely perfect job and I am almost hesitant to ever put these heads back on any engine. They just look too pretty. You can eat of them.

I boxed mine up and sent them to John Walker in Seattle. First class job.

All my non-DIY Porsche work will go to JW, though I have heard good things about Competition Engineering. John has so much personal experience with these machines that if anything is not right, he'd notice it right away. It boggles my mind to think of how many 911 heads this guy has done over the past thirty years. For those of you who do not know, John only works on 911s. He'll tell you where to take a 944, but he won't work on them.

No No No - You do not have a problem - On some of the 1987 models - Steve Wong fuel maps richen the mixture for idle too much. Try connecting the brown wires on the outside of your DME - this leans out your mix and will get rid of your smoking issue. If it doesn't - contact Steve and he will program you a less aggressive chip.

If that doesn't solve it - I think you need to check your oil intake #1 - leak down #2 if #1 is outside the norm... I use one qt every 1100-1500 miles - and I drive my car hard -

These guys do unreal head work. The link has some info about their machine shop and head work services.
http://www.memphismotorwerks.com/ They turned my my 5.4 sec 0 - 60 cabriolet into a 4.8 0 - 60 car by redoing the top end right.

Jeremy:
You mean me, Doug. I do and it is running like a beast. I only have 700 miles since the rebuild and they will re-adjust the valves at 1,000 miles and off to dyno we will go. Here are some screen shots from G-Tech pro I posted on Rennlist a while back. I am now consistently 4.8 and 4.9 unless I spin the wheels too much at the start. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=106720

I'm sorry - Doug - Glad to hear she's back on the road - I sent you a link to a track car too on the other thread. 4.8 to 4.9 - very nice for a 1990 car huh? Have you done any 1/4 mile times?

Not enough room where I do 0 - 60s. I can get 1/8 miles in, but then I am practically locking it up before a turn.

Still sweet #'s - and glad she back on the road for you... You need to look for one of those "import nights" at the local drag strip. Teach those ricers the meaning of respect with your 1990 Porsche! HAHA

That two tone car is a trip. I need to see that one in person to see what bare carbon fibre looks like.

Yes, I agree that's the only downside I could see - but then again - it's not sacreligious to do a cheap repaint on a track car - it's going to get knicked anyway.
For $24K - someone's already done all the hard work - You could drive it in a few DE's - see if you like it - then swap out the engine if you want more power - and you sound to me like a guy who likes more power. Track car is different though - much more improtant to develop a smooth line and maintain the speed.
