Let your wife drive your 911

Something pretty cool happened to me last week. I was borrowing my wifes car (GTI) because I had just detailed my 911 and figured I'd give the daily-driver the day off. My wife needed to go to the post office (works at home) and had to use my 911. I got an e-mail from her that afternoon that went something like this:

"Your SC is so fun! I had to take it to the post office and I forgot how much fun it is to drive. You can take my car to work anytime!"

Maybe its not such a bad idea to let the wives join in on the fun, after all aren't they the ones who "consult" our spending $$ on these wonderful vehicles?

Bite your tounge man, have you gone mad! This is a complex machine, one missed shift and thousands of dollars will be down the tube, (or that's some of my rhetoric at least!!)

Actually my wife wants nothing to do with shifting any gears, be they 911 gears or Jeep gears, shifting is out for her. I have even tried (patiently) to instruct the fair maiden, IT AIN'T HAPPENING.

Something about pushing in the clutch and moving a lever with one hand while holding the wheel with the other just freaks her out.

Good thought; however, my wife does not drive a stick - what a shame!!! She does love to ride in it.

My girfriend drove my car once. Brought it back and said she would never drive it again (yeee haaa). She said that now she knows how people felt riding in stage coaches. Let alone the fact that I called her twice wondering if she ripped the front air dam off.

My wife can drive a stick, but she has this notion 911s are hard to control...

...so my plan is working...

Actually, I'd let her drive it anytime she wants. I'd probably never get it back though...

So I go to my loving wife and I say, "Honey I realize you have completely ruined two mag wheels on your 2003 Matrix, and one mag wheel on your 2002 Audi A4 by running over/into curbs. And then you backed the Audi into a stationary 45 foot tall 20 feet wide light pole.and you have a hard time shifting a stick, even one that works well. But what the hell take my pride and joy into heavy downtown traffic and have a ball. Be sure and put 3 or 4 of your rubenesque friends in the back seat so you will have someone to talk with while waiting for the highway patrol and the tow truck.

In my 67 912, my wife never drove it. As far as the 83SC, forget about it. If she wrecked it, divorce might be in the works!

My wife grins every time she drives the 73E. And you should've seen her strutting through the paddock at Summitt Point after driving the 73E on the track during our PCA region's last Hi-Perf Driving Clinic. With her helmet on she looked like an astronaut heading to the launch pad for a moon mission. Simply priceless.

My wife dosen't drive! But she likes to go fast! She says it turns her on when I "take control" on the road. Cool, I love to take her for rides....I always wind up with a really big smile on my face.

Yeah, she drove it a week ago for the first time. Clutch doesn't slip much, just kinda grabs; the gears are not where the Boxster gears are, so she has to think about it and hits 4th a couple of times instead of 2nd. I don't think she ever got half throttle. Her comment as she was finishing up, "Well, I WAS curious." I guess that says it all. Meanwhile, she has her father's old '44 Jeep with a SB Chevy in it with 262 cam (Duntov) and Holley 4bbl. and the Box to keep her interest.

Good. Now I can go to the track and know the rolling stock around here is distributed between us fairly. She has 2 toys, I have 2 toys and we each have a daily driver. Can't get any more fair than that, can it?

Cool

I didn't want this one! She found it and decided that it was better to own one that ran than the other ones that didn't.

As I closed the deal with the guy she headed down the road and promptly took it to around 6500rpm for the 1-2 shift.

Well now I'm slowly working on the rest of the fleet!

Good luck,
David Duffield

I keep waiting for Sarah to weigh in on this one. For those that don't know her, she is a Pelican Head that is the primary driver of a 930. She occasionally allows her husband to drive it.

I want my wife to catch the same disease. Sick metaphor, but what's better than my best friend being addicted too.

The problem I've found is that my wife doesn't have the patience to get over the initial 60-day learning curve before one "gets it."

I'm still working on that, and also working on biting my tongue about parking spots, warming up the engine, watching the gauges, etc.

My wife loves it, and insists the next car in the driveway will be HER cab.

She loves fast drives, but is too paranoid to drive it figuring she would never live down crunching it. I like to feed that paranoia.

My wife hated the 911 in pictures, she wanted me to get a 944 Turbo instead . Luckily, when she saw the 911 I ended up buying, she actually liked it more than I did initially, it's "cute". It took a little time for her to get the hang of the 901 with sloppy bushings, but now she frequently asks to drive it. Now I just need to get her to volunteer more money to work on it..... That's step 2!

I'm lucky because my wife loves to drive the P-car. Her biggest complaint with the 87 Cab was it wasn't fast enough... No problem honey - I have some ideas from my friends at Pelican!

Here she is in my old C2 - one of my favorite comments that she made after a spirited drive over one of our long bridges after a late meeting one night that she took the P-car... "Honey, I think we need to get the wheels balanced on the Porsche - I noticed a little shimmy above 120!" God I love that woman!
