Cali DMV revisited.
ok, this time really tested me.
i went a few days ago, paid my $66, got my temp reg. tag. (prev. post) i went back yesterday, took the car, needed VIN verification. so the DMV inspector looked at the car, wrote down the vin #, looked at the emission sticker on the fan shroud. then looked me in the eye and said, "How do i know this is a 911?" i said, "you're kidding me, right?" "no, i need to verify that this is a 911. where is the badge?" (i have a aftermarket tail, no 911 badge) i scoured the car, on a sticker in the engine compartment, i found 'porsche: 911- H' so he accepted it, and now i have a official title for a 1975 Porsche 911H. great... i grabbed my new plates (number xxxxx913, missed it by two customers!) and ran outta there. cliff

Is this common in CA?

Why do you expect everyone to know 911 is a Porsche? It might just be an emergency call #?

i noticed a trend in the automotive world of removing all the exterior badges. make, model, everything. i guess it is a cleaner look?

Too bad you couldn't have found a '930' number around somewhere....
![]() The idiot couldn't accept the VIN, eh? Starts with ......oh, what's this? 911? My Chevy truck VIN doesn't start with CHEV, so how do I know it's a Chevy? It don't got no stinkin' badges either. |

So if you put the bowtie badge on the tail, would the DMV rocket-scientist inspector have thought it was a Chevy?

For all you out-of-staters, please understand that going to a CA DMV office can open your eyes to how badly a business/system/service can be run. Last time I went there was a good ol' boy who flipped out and yelled, "I can't believe this state! I'm going back to South Carolina!" I was stoked, one less person on front of me. You gotta prepare yourself for anything. Disney land long lines, cluelessness, attitude, et cetera.
unfixed, that's awesome!!! I think Porsche only made 10 ROW 911Hs and about 20 Euro versions. Post some pictures, that might be one of the rarest Porsches on the West coast! ![]()

Calif DMV
You need to get out of the big cities!
It is almost a pleasure to go to DMV here. I went yesterday to register my 911. No appointment and it was only 1/2 hour from entering the door, to leaving with everything, no hassle. Heck the girl that helped me, on 2 occasions has verified motorcycles for me. She helped remove the cowl on my Ducati, since the VIN is underneath, and wiped oil off a dirt bike case to see VIN with no complaints. A month ago I register my '59 356, that had no paperwork in the last 15 years. Smooth as silk. The clerk (different one) was super helpful, "ah that's OK", piece of cake. Heck the CHP even drove out to my house to do the vehicle verification on the 356 since it was not running, and could not go to DMV. I've been to the Eureka DMV 20+ times in the last 7 years (ya, I buy a lot of stuff), and never once a hassle, problem, or less then super helpful clerk. And of course I will not rub in that we don't have the Bi-annual smog check up here.... Now when I lived in LA, it sure was a different story.

I work on a GT3 Cup Car and a 72 that has a 993 body on it (both POC cars). We were loading the cars one day and a guy that moved into the owner's neiborhood started asking us questions. The first question was what kind of car is it? Uhhm, I thought the 911 body was the most recognized car in the world. And besides he was a guy. WTF??? I should have said Chevy Lumina. Hehehe

![]() I reported this before: I use a proxy registration service or the AAA as much as possible. When I registered/titled the out-of-state 911 last year, the 'inspector' at the proxy wanted to know if the engine was in the back somewhere while staring at the front trunk and VIN plate. Looked at the plate and the pillar plate, but never the body stamping which is 2 feet from the riveted plate. Hell, I didn't even have any carpeting to pull back. Now back to the engine thing, I said, "Yes, it's in the back." I was thinking it was probably not a good time to be my usual smart ass self. ![]() |
