1968 Factory Race Car???

Hi Guys, new to the hobby here and I need a little bit of research or info from you experts. I was told this is the place to come.

I have a guy trying to sell me a 1968 911. He claims that the car is a "special edition" that was produced for Porsche to race in SCCA. It has six 2bbl Webers on it and what looks like a factory aircleaner. He claims it is a 2.4 But I did not know to ask if it was bored to a 2.4 or came from the factory that way. The car is amazingly powerful in a freakish sort of way. Much more so than the 1973 911 I once owned. It has a sport o matic trans and he claims it was produced to show the amazing potential of this trans combo to gain interest in it through race victory. Has anyone out here every heard of such a thing???

There were several cars with the sportomatic transmission that raced through the years. Yes there was 1968 911 sportomatics being raced but they were all 2.0's. Some were 911S's with 160 HP and other were T's (lighter than an S) with a motor from the S. In the books they say they were tuned and produced 175 HP, but I don't think they were bored out. Yes they were raced to show off the transmission and even test it at the time, Vic Elford liked it so much he even ordered one after winning a 6,000 mile race in one.

All this said, I bet this car was not produced for Porsche to race in the SCCA. Someone else built this to just race in SCCA. By the way have any pics? The car sounds cool but his history is a little blurred. I have a Sporto and love it, but I am a rare kind.

If I wasn't doubting the story myself I would have not posted the question, but at the same time how can you not look into it?? He showed me some paperwork where he took the car years ago to an SCCA meet and won first place with no real racing experience because the car was so fast and handled so well. He said they all made a big fuss about the car and it made him nervous so he never went back. He also says it has some kind of rare aluminum wheels with center caps. It was dark when I first saw it. Is there some way to confirm it from a VIN number or an engine number? Are there some give away details in the car, the body, the engine, the #s that might help identify it? I am going to look at it again tomorrow and will check for aluminum of fiberglass panels and get the VIN and engine numbers. (can you tell me where the engine numbers would be locatred??)

PS: He also said it had fourwheel disc brakes and that it was a Euro Spec car. Did all 1968 911's come with 4wheel discs??

I believe all 911's have 4 wheel disc brakes.

Post the Vin # and Engine # and there are several people who will be able to decode it for you here on the BBS.

Per Warren: "... the type number is found slightly forward of the serial number location, and on a horizontal rib to the right of the fan mounting location.." . The number will be in the form of xxx/yy.

This link may help also: rs motor verification

I believe that in 1968 porsche built a light weight typ r coupe that had 210 horse power but those cars in good condition sell in the 300,000 dollar range. At least the one that was advertized in panorama.

The cars Elford and co. won with at Nurburgring were 911Rs with Sporto trans. I can't remeber the title of the race but it went on for 84hours and the drivers did 7 and 1/2 hour stints each! Porsche trying to prove the reliability of the tranny - I think they succeeded

Does anybody know what color those cars that won the 84 hour race were? This car was originally white.

Phil, you are right. According to Starkey, in 1967 Porsche ran one 911R with sporto at the Marathon de la Route at the Nurburgring for Vic Elford/Heerman/Neerspach who won by 34 laps (that's around 500 miles!)

VINs appear to be 307670 - 671, 305876 and 11899001R - 11899019R

Pics would be great. You could also pay PNA for a "Cardex" on the the car.

The special wheels the seller is refering to are 7R rims, some of the most desirable Fuchs there are. Porsche only made 20 or so 911Rs. The motor is very similar to the 906 motor and produced 210 bhp, with 2 plugs per cylinder. The oil tank was located in front of the right rear wheel as in the 72 911. There was one other VIN: 306681

Have a look at Ernie Wilberg’s 911R site

There was a guy in Florida that raced a sportomatic 911 (actually several over the years) If i remember correctly his last name was Casey- or something close to that? He built up his cars from street sporto's- they were NOT factory built racers

interesting to see what this car actually is- most of the real cars have been found and identified

Too bad about Niki Lauda. I wish they still used the Nurburgring for racing... yes, I do know about the annual "tuner" 24hr race, but since it's not "regular" we don't get to see it televised.

If the asking price in US dollars has less than 6 digits to the left of the decimal point, the car is not authentic.

Hello Nick, should the 911R be considered a '68 911 since the chassis numbers begin with 118?

Sprint.
