Want an SC, had a frustrating day.
Hi y'all,
Well, the one I was to see on saturday was sold before I even got there. Drove to Ojai today and saw a gorgeous one, only to find out that someone else had 1st. right of refusal ( it was sold this evening). I am very frustrated. I'be been hanging out on this forum for 3 months or so now and finally sold my spare Alfa. I have money and I can't even give it away !!! I'm looking for an SC coupe with air. Not silver. Preferably in the So Cal area. Okay Pelicans, let's find me a car !!! Dan Stevenson Ranch, CA 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider ( looking for sexy German roomate ) |
It's in No. Cal and it needs a little work, but the price might be OK..
http://www.craigslist.org/pen/car/22002203.html Nice find in an all original rust-free local California car with only 86,000 original miles. 3.0 engine [the good one], 5 speed, Fuchs, lots of maintenance records. Could use paint & smaller mechanical stuff. ONLY $7878. Call 415-298-3270. For other pix click here: http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/bimmerbros/album?.dir=/harrys+78+911sc |
so there are what, 3 guys looking for an SC in SoCal right now? (well, 2 in SoCal, one in AZ). Shall we start a pool?

Take a pill, and chill...
It may take some time but your car is out there, be patient. |
|
Please don't grab te next car you see, just because it is available. Even if you have millions, this is an expenditure that you will either love, or regret forever. Take your time, do your homework, and wait for the right one. One extra week or month will mean nothing in a year if you have a car stuck in your garage waiting for you to find time/ money to rebuild or take it to someone to rebuild.
I bought the second 911 I looked at. I overpaid, and I still haven't fixed some of the stuff I knew was wrong with it (I got it 3 years ago). I am still enjoying it, but I would look longer if I were to do it again. No regrets, but occasional frustration. |
Dont jump at the first car you find. The good ones dont last long, but be patient. You dont want to get a bad one.
|
Yeah,, I definitely have to resist that urge. When I bought my Alfa GTV ( the car I just sold ) I had been looking at one and the guy had been out of the country and when he got back was sounding wishy-washy so I interpreted that as a sign to give up. I bought the next one I saw and paid more for a worse car. I ended up losing probably $4000 after I finally gave up and sold it.
Thanks for the support and I'll keep on looking with an even MORE discerning eye. |
Yup, take your time...I know it's tough. You also have the best crowd behind you to advise you if ine is available. Try Autotrader also.
While local is great don't discount other cars. With the network of guys and gals here you can make a pretty informed purchase. Especially if someone is hardup to sell their car here in the East when it's 30 below. Good luck! |
Listen to everybody on the board here, I am currently looking for a Sc targa or cab. I wanted one so much that i forgot to make sure the car i wanted was a good condition , well i almost bought a crappy car and even the board told me it would be huge mistake and i still didnt listen guess what? lucky for me the seller was a idiot and couldnt get the car fixed and now i realize, patience is a virtue. My mistake could have cost me $$$$$. The car will show up when you least expect it for now enjoy the hunt and be very picky!
|
My philosophy would be to hold out for a really good car, and then be prepared to modestly overpay for it. An extra $2,000 in purchase price is not much compared to the extra cost and frustration that a bad car could bring.
To me, "really good" doesn't necessarily mean garage queen / super-low-miles - it means clean, un-molested, and well-maintained with reasonable miles. |
that looks as if it's been a rough 86k put on that thing. the seat is torn, dent in the hood. wonder what the service records look like. for that paltry sum maybe it's a decent deal,,,,,, but.
i'm in no cal and would not mind taking a look at it if you want to set something up. email me. |
What's wrong with Ebay?
|
That car does look very rough in the photos. 86k? Maybe, but it looks to be in rougher shape than many I've seen with 200k

You never mentioned how much you have to spend. Since you're looking for a good SC, then I'm assuming that you've got about 12k to spend?
I wish I would have known this sooner, but our local Porsche chapter has a news letter where people sell their cars. The Panarama magazine might be another place to look at...just a thought. I did get mine off of ebay, but it was pure dumb luck. I bought mine sight-unseen and it worked out great. Called and talked with the seller several times before I made the decision. Knowing what I know now, I would never do it again. |
There's a nice '84 Carrera for $11k in today's Wash. Post. Check out the Post's classifieds. We're far away, but there are a lot of great 911's out here and tons of qualified people to go look at them for you.

I don't think it has air, but POPS is selling a Minerva Blue 79 SC in the Seattle area. This is a very nice car with many upgrades. The guy selling is reputable, hangs out with the same group of guys that were part of that "Leland in Seattle" thread a while back. Just take a two and a half hour flight to Seattle and drive home down highway one. Now that even put a smile on my face. :)

Hi Guys,
Yup, I have at least $12k. Won't go over $15k though. I wish I had the time to fly and drive, but we just had a baby 8 weeks ago and I can't be gone for more than a half day or so. Thanks and keep the ideas coming ! |
hurry up alfapwr! because if all works out this year, i am going to buy an SC.
