1995 993 with salvage title....buy it?

I can buy a 993 with 20K miles that was hit on the side. The body shop wants to sell it now that is is fixed. I have yet to see it but my friend says it is repaired very nice. The door and front fender was hit. Only thing is, it has a salvage title. It is painted but needs to be fitted up again (glass, trim, wheels, etc.). If the car is repaired well is it a good buy at $18K. How hard would it be to insure it properly with a salvage title, and would reselling t be hard? I guess that if the car turns out good I would drive it until it dies and not bother reselling it.

Thanks,
Mike

if it is straight and was fixed well, sounds interesting. You'll have to check with your insurance to see about that aspect. Reselling will be hard...figure 30-50% hit for the salvage title. But if you're going to keep it and drive it, and the car is straight, it is a great way to get a car on the cheap.

I would love to find a 95 at that kind of price...buy it and drive the snot out of it.

That would be my plan. Drive it daily and not worry about ever reselling it.

I would have a PPI done on the whole car. Make sure the drive train is good. If you have any issues with the drive train you could quicly run the cost up to a accident free 95 993 for $27K - $30K range.

Hmmmmm.... don't know if I've seen any 993s lately for $27k. That's pretty cheap. About $32k is the least I've seem them go for. Sounds like it could be a great track car Mike!

Like Nostatic said, buy it and drive the hell out of it. PPI first of course. Drive it until it dies, then make it into a track car, because the resale will be awful. 18K though, wow, that's a deal on a 993. You won't care what kind of title it has from the driver's seat.

That's like half price compared to my SC!

If a PPI checks out w/ less than $5k need in maintenance/reassembly, I'd say go for it!

It sounds like a good deal, esp. if you plan to drive the snot out of it as recemmended Be sure whoever PPIs it is familiar with building totals.

Let us know what happens. If it's a good car and you decide not to take it please post the location... hint hint

My SC had a salvage title due to some massaging of the insurance claim. The very SMALL oil fire in the engine compartment (4 years ago) did little more than blister some paint on the right rear of the engine bay. The owner, a very thorough (read anal) replaced everything that was even in the vicinity of the fire...whether it was affected or not. Great records, all the updates and recent receipts for about $4,000 of misc work swayed my decision...don't rgret it in the least as I saw a BUNCH of tired SC's with no records for more money. I'd get it!

I'd buy it in a second assuming the PPI checks okay> Just because it has a salvage title doesn't mean you have to drive the s@#$ out of it. People you pass on the street won't know about it history, and its none of their business anyway. A car is , at best, a depreciating asset.

As far as people on the street go, absolutely. I sold my 90 C4 cab which was a theft recovery for $3K more than I paid for it after owning it for 3 years and adding 40K miles. The guy I sold it to didn't care, didn't get a PPI, and in fact never even started the car before buying it. I insisted he at least start the car so that he knew it worked (terrible thunderstorm outside so he didn't test drive). Starting the car almost killed the deal as his wife thought it needed a muffler. She had never heard a flat 6 before and it was in my garage so it echoed a little. Of the dozen or so people that called about the car, only one was already a Porsche enthusiast. If you plan to drive it for a while, and the repairs brought the car to a decent condition, buying salvage is a great way to save some coin. When you sell, however, you are required to disclose the title status I believe. My title said clear because it was older than however many years when I retitled it, but I still disclosed its history.

The car sold to a Porsche novice. It was parked outside in the snow and I could not get it inside to inspect the repairs. I was not going to buy the car just by word that the repairs were done properly. It may have been done right, but I wanted to be sure. It needed to be put back together (bumper cover, lights, glass, interior) but in the meantime the careless seller (bodyshop) had it sitting in the snow uncovered. That alone turned me off already. Who knows, I may have missed a good one.

I would say you made a wise decision. As tempting as it was, if not fixed properly, it would have been more trouble than it's worth. Sounds like a half ass bodyshop.

It's better to miss a few good ones than buy one bad one.
