Oil tank cleaning

The tank on my '73 is one of the nastiest looking parts I have removed from the car. I scrubbed the outside of the tank with a degreaser and blasted it with a pressure washer, there is still baked on crud all over it. It has to be dirty on the inside.

I know where to send my oil cooler to get it cleaned, but what about the oil tank? Whats the easiest and safest way to clean the inside and outside of the tank?

TIA

I would think some of that really nasty carb cleaner and a brush on the outside, then put some of that cleaner on the inside and shake it around really well, maybe scrub some, then spray liberally with brake cleaner and give it a while to dry thoroughly, but others may chime in with more proven methods.

Sloshing the tank with anything other than oil is bad idea right? I know POR15 has a gastank treatment solution. Is there anything like that for the oil tanks?

There are a lot of good threads on this. I ended up taking the low tech route and soaked the interior with kerosene until I finally got it to rinse clean, let it dry out, sloshed a couple of quarts of oil around inside, drained those and put it back in. (I did find two extra dipsticks though) If you do a search, you will find some "better" ways to do it. One thing was, my car seemd to run 5-10 degrees cooler after I cleaned 30 years worth of gunk off of the outside of the tank.

One more opinion: I just had mine hot tanked at the local radiator shop. Came out spotless!

I did not clean the inside, but did have a thermal dispersant coating put onto the exterior. They claimed it would last a lot better than paint. It's not clear how much heat is lost from the oil tank but it's gotta be some.

That thing is a mess to get back in -- 2 person job - just did it this am.
