Splitter color - body color or black?
I'm getting ready to paint my new bumper, and I'm thinking of doing the splitter in medium-gloss black. Why? Because even in gelcoat, it's getting the crap beat out of it; painted in body color it will look that much worse. At least in basic black, I can touch it up easily.
Thoughts?

Yep..good thinking..or leave the splitter in bare aluminum or carbon-fiber look.

Is it a bad idea to leave body parts in gelcoat instead of painting?

I'd go with a flat or eggshell finish (black). Touch-up does not show up as much the farther you get away from gloss.

Is there any type of clearcoat you can double up the layers on to protect against chips? Your entire valence is going to take a beating on the track anyway so I say paint it the color that you like best (appearance). You'll be repainting the whole thing periodically anyway if you track it frequently right?

I'd paint it a textured black. Or even put a coat of that pickup-bed Rhino liner (or whatever it's called) stuff on it. It's going to take lots of hits.

I'd take it to your nearest "Rhino Linings" or "Line-X" and have them spray it. They can vary the texture and thickness too, so you can get it thin, and smooth if you wish. They can spray custom colors too. Just a thought.

Rhino Liners, good way to help out the weight distribution.
![]() If you use flex additive in your paint like they use one today's body colored bumpers, it will ward off more of the damage. Nothing is going to help at the track. Except Rhino Liner. I wanna see this. |

I have to hit the paint store tomorrow - ran out of DX-84; I'll see what they have for this.

Just for my guidance, what exactly is this "splitter"?
Is it the part of the front valence which sits below the bumper (with the front rubber spoiler attached to?). Or is this something only found on track cars? Thanks!

Thom, did you make or buy your splitter?
I want to add a splitter to the stock valence of my SC but I'm not sure on what to make it out of.

Paul, The splitter mounts to the bottom of the valence and is parallel to the road. It acts much like the chin spoiler on a stock Carrera valence.

maybe I wasn't clear on what I meant. I know what a splitter is. I want to add a splitter to my car because I don't like the look of a chin spoiler and since I don't have or like tails I don't need a lot of downforce at the front. Let's try this again. Thom, did you make or buy your splitter? Thanks.

Actually isn't a splitter an aid in making downforce (reducing lift) an a similar manner to adding the stock chin spoiler?

I bought the splitter (and bumper, and hood...) from:
