Crane Ignition in 930
Finally got the Crane Multi-spark CDI and coil installed on the 930.
It has never ran better! I have not messed with plug gaps or timing yet, and I'm still running stock plug wires. Installation was a little tricky. I fabricated an aluminum plate that utilizes (2) 6mm threaded holes located on the upper sheet metal, behind the FI. (not sure what they are for??) The plate allowed room for the cdi box and the crane coil. I put 1" diameter holes in the plate behind the cdi box to aid cooling. The bottom of the plate was anchored to a vertical pinch weld flange that runs between the shock towers, with self-tapping, SS screws. |

Will try to get some good photos this weekend. I need to get back in and tidy up the wires anyway.

"Finally got the Crane Multi-spark CDI and coil installed on the 930.
It has never ran better!" Now, why hasn't any of the OEM car manufactures, e.g. Porsche/Bosch, thought of what Crane & the other Multi-Spark guys have designed? Must be that lack of engineering talent or they really don't want to provide the consumer the best engineered ignition system. Isn't it strange how things are sometimes? I guess that statement you always hear "No free rides in life." must not be true.

Additional Point:
In discussing a MSD CD unit with one of my Porsche shops, the shop owner indicated that he thought that the MSD provided a performance improvemnt because the engine idle had increased and the car felt more responsive. In discussing the installation further, he indicated that the MSD instructions recommended that the ignition timing be advance 3 degrees. Could the advancing of the ignition timing be the source of the increased idle and responsiveness and not the multiple spark? I think so.

Loren,
It's true there are no "free rides" but some are less expensive than others. As stated in my original post, I haven't adjusted timing or plug gap yet and have quicker throttle response than I had with either the stock box or Perma-Tune. Can't say about the durability as yet. Time will tell. Time has already told the story of Bosch/Perma-Tune reliability. Replacing 30 year old technology with semi-modern, at a quarter of the price plus added performance.......what was I thinking??? DLG '79 930 |

What's modern technology? That's an over used expression! Have you analyzed
this design and components used? I think not. Furthermore, we always get good "feelings" after spending money, right? Check out this web site (www.systemsc.com) on the Technical page on Ignition Systems for some additional insights.

Additional Note:
Talking about 30 year old technology, CDI is ancient technology. No OEM car manufacturer has used it in ANY new car designs for over 20 years!

I figured elec. + & - line noise caused by something in the MSD. So the 1st. reaction was to rev to over 3k rpm.. where the multiple sparks are supposed to stop.. the RF ticking didn't change at all. Tried different grounds = NG.. So now I start a MSD thread to solve the RF noise. I did the routine audio condensors, etc. advice and even tried some educated "Try this" from Warren. So I used the MSD Noise Supressor for about $30 Therefore clean audio on high end Focals.. Bingo and I have a 25yr. history with MSD. Whatever floats your boat....... Ron
