oil cooler lines,engine to tstat

ok, i just need to make sure my lines are the correct ones. (before i tear everything apart). the external oil cooler lines replace the obviously replace the line shown on page 27 of the 101 projects book right? if so, i think i have the wrong line. i laid it next to the car in roughly the correct orientation. the engine end of line is pointed to the drivers side not towards the back (see photo). do you think the smaller hard line is installed backwards? it doesnt look like it has been disconnected anytime lately. i couldnt break the connection to flip it. i am soaking it with PBblaster right now.

That looks like the S-hose that connects to the on-engine oil cooler. The other line that goes from the oil tank to the T-stat is pretty straight. You don't need to worry about the pre-74 crossover line. That's for people who backdate to early heat exchangers or go to SSIs.

but i am supposed to leave rubber line that connects to the on-engine oil cooler to the back of the oil tank alone right? that line is connected with worm clamps. that is the "s" line right?

Those lines are correct for your car. That line goes from fitting (crossover) in front of the engine cooler to Tstat . If you cant get it apart....leave it...don't damage it because you can install it as is. Leave the S hose you describe (goes from back of oil tank to oil cooler..attached with clamps). Remove line from front of tank to crossover. The line you picture goes from crossover to thermostat. Another goes from fitting on bottom front of oil tank (wher removed line went) to thermostat. Chuck has a drawing on the Elephant Racing web page that might help you with connections. If you ask real nice, I will pull off a wheel and post a photo or two tomorrow.

thanks fint. maybe you should post a picture please.
the crossover line ends with a fitting that faces towards the front of the car. the line (pictured above) however, the fitting would appear to face from the passenger side to the driver side. i dont get it.

I understand that if yours is a "california delivered" car that the crossover and the crossover to oil tank line are different. that may explain your quandry. maybe a 90 degree fiiting could adapt it.

thanks fint! mine is totally different! my cross over is at the end of the car in back by the muffler. i get it, i know which line i need. it is similar, but straighter and the rubber section is still flexible to reach.

i like your turbo valve covers. they look nice black. powdercoated? opps! i just noticed the stud that holds the two lines. i dont know if my car as that. oh well. get the drill

Thanks. Yes, they are powdercoated. They look good with SSI's in black. I can't take credit for the idea though...Guys at Supertec installed them when they built my engine. As far as I can tell, they didn't miss a trick. Now I just need to replace those leaking shocks! I did install the lines and carrera cooler myself though. If you want pics of any other part of the install, let me know. They should be the same. My car was a non-external cooler car and I did not need to drill any holes for the line install (bolts and studs were there), but did have to drill to mount the cooler brackets.

Oh, don't forget to test your thermostat before installing. It is awfully hard to get to after it is in (ask me how I know). My lines and thermostat were used and the Thermostat would not open. I had to replace the wax/plunger/spring. Found a thermostat rebuild kit for about $50...it was easy, just swap the parts.
