This looks like an interesting car with potential, but I'm having trouble with its valuation. The owner lost interest in the project.
'70 Targa with '87 or so 3.2L. 915 Transmission. New paint is good, but not great quality. Bumper deco removed, holes filled. Buffing may help a bit but it'll never be a show car without another respray. Doors replaced due to rust, but need work for proper fit. Needs Targa top rebuild. No rust noted. Needs rear glass installed. Has 15" wheels. Interior is good, but needs some gluing, installing of a few pieces. Seats have been recovered in marine vinyl. Steering wheel is original, but rough shape. Dash is good. All weatherstripping off car. Many new pieces included. Abarth muffler installed. New clutch. Assuming it runs and drives OK, what's it worth in this condition? My thoughts are put it together, get bigger wheels, add a ducktail, aftermarket seats, Carrera script. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I've read that installation of the rear targa glass is tricky to boot.

I would say between 12,500 and 15,000K. The majority of the hard work of a conversion has been done, it seems to me like the car needs a little tlc to be done and since that is not too mechanical that could be done by someone at home and thus saving the expense of shop labor.

I wouldn't worry too much about breaking targa glass. Its super strong except for removal where they crack. Usually people can't give away used targa glass.
Looks like a fun car to drive. It doens't seem to rain in Pheonix much. Leave out the rear window for ventilation. Of couse, The AC will blow out but who cares. Other than a few personal pet peeves (black horn grills, painted light trim, painted rear bumper guards and black surruond trun signal lenses are incorrect for a 70) I like it.

What?!?!

If the doors need treaking, I would have a shop look at it before going much further.
Take a look at what scca_ita found on the local white 73.... "What bothers me is that IMHO when the previous owner replaced the pans I dont think the car we plumb which made the front fenders and door hanger/Jam mis align. So when the fenders where put back on they did not align with the door jam and did not bolt them on properly. So over time the doors have drooped and the jam has bent backwards maybe only a 1/8 - 1/4 inch. But a 1/4 inch at the top of the jam means 1/2 inch plus at the back edge of the doors." That scares the heck out of me when I see doors that are not right. If its just door adjustment, and everyhting else is ok, I would put a dollar figure closer to 10k. I look at it like this, price a 70 targa in similar condition w/o engine. Would that be 4k-5k? Then a 3.2 engine goes for 6k-7k? I'm not sure but I think that's close enough. And remember, an engine transplant is not a "dollar-in-so-value-goes-up-a-dollar" investment. Right? It's a niche vehicle for a particular buyer. Not easy to match those 2 up. So I think about 10k is plenty. Depends on the specifics, as well. Is it local to you, Lee? |

Where do you guys find these modified early cars? A 3.2 in an early car must be crazy fun.

For reference last December I paid $12K for my '73 coupe W/3.2 installed. I think my car was in a little better shape. But very comparable to this one.

Has it had any suspension work done? A 3.2 w/ stock rear torsion bars would explain why its sagging so much @ the rear.

Does a 3.2 motor weigh that much more than a 2.2 motor?

70 targa value according to PCA
I just received a Valuation Form from Porsche Club Of America on my 1970 911E Targa for "purposes of obtaining proper insurance coverage".
Date: January 2004 Average Price Valuation: $12,690 Number of Data Points: 30 (From data sources in 6-mth period to date) Upper Price Range Limit: $18,640 (Approx. 90% of all Porsche values in this category can be expected to be below this number. The 10% above this value woulb be in exceedingly good condition, or true concours.) Lower Price Range Limit: $6,740 (Approx. 90% of all Porsche values in this category can be expected to be above this number Cars worth less would be in extremely poor condition.) Avg price for 6-mth period between 6 and 12 months prior to date: $10,160 Hope this helps! Rocky

$10k is an okay price if the car and engine check out. Sounds like he may be willing to negotiate too. Does he have the original engine? It's not worth additional $$ but wouldn't hurt to have for resale with the car at a later time.
Definitely have the engine checked out too. Could be a fun car for around $9k or so. -Dan 1970 911T Targa
