How loud is a sport muffler?

OK, I realize the definition of loud is relative, but I am seriously considering getting a sport muffler to replace the Dansk 2-in, 2-out on my 3.2.

The 2.7 I had in the car previously had headers and Supertrapps and they were loud. I loved the sound (and volume) about 80% of the time, but the other 20% was spent waking up neighbors and setting off car alarms and I don't want to go back to that, really.

I've heard sport mufflers quite a few times in the past, but it has been just long enough ago that I really can't remember how loud they were. Can someone give me a feel for how anti-social a sport muffler really is?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Mike

Mine is pretty darned loud 'on-song'. At 3-5k it is setting off car alarms. At idle and cruising speed it is definitely louder than the OEM muffler but pleasing to the ear and not overbearing. Do a search, there were some audio files posted a few weeks ago.

If the exit pipes are in line with the intake pipes then very loud. Jerry Woods makes a good sport muffler that isn't as loud as ones from other manufactures. I've made 3 sport mufflers with varying degrees of loudness by welding baffles inside. I also made baffles that slip in the tail pipes I use for the street, and take them out for track use. There was a thread sometime ago on tail pipe baffles.

Well they vary as they usually are modified early oem muffs.....what IS nice about Suupertrapps is that adding or deleting discs will change back pressure as well as tone and loudness.....

The two sport muffs I had, had annoying mid range resonance problems....

Thanks. I heard the audio files posted recently and could get a good feel for the "tone", but not the volume so much.

It sounds like it may still be a bit loud for my current needs. I'm finding myself now (with the Dansk) thinking it is too quiet for my tastes. This doesn't seem to go along with other people's impression of the Dansk, so I've wondered if maybe the sport wouldn't be *that* loud (for me).

I'll probably never know unless I try one, I suppose.

Yeah, my Supertrapps had 18 disks in them, so they definitely tended towards the very loud end of the spectrum. I loved the sound, though...

You could always try the Bursch single out muffler....louder than the Dansk dual out, believe it or not......if that is not to the liking replace JUST the muffler with a Flowmaster......using the Bursch piping.

My newly painted 914/6 that I got off of evilbay will be ditching the Bursch....it's brand new. If interested in a trade, let me know. If you call me, I can fire it up over the phone and you can actually hear it.....gotta love AT&T and free long distance.....

I also modified a pair of Supertrapps.I took the fiberglass packing out, rewrapped the baffle with s/s mesh, welded in a reducer at the front. This forced part of the exhaust to go over and through the mesh. It's a little quieter and has a higher nicer pitch. I also used 9 disks with this. The problem is with a straight through design regardless of packing or disks it's still going to be loud. This set up is on my 2.4 carburated motor in my v.w. crewcab.

The 2/1 out Dansk is a nice muffler and louder than the OEM but with good sound. Very civilized for the pedestrian drivers The 2/2 Dansk is another step or two up. I set off car alarms on a regular basis and everyone in the neighborhood knows when I start my car up.

But it isn't headers and supertraps either. Might be just what you are looking for.

No one *****es about the noise, even my wife on a long trip (and it gets tiring in the cabin) but everyone notices the car, first by the exhaust noise. 2/2 is just enough to annoy you at times, but too fun to make change the rest of the time.

Hey Iroc. If you come to Talladega you can listen to mine. Heck we can swap for a while if you want?? Try it out.

I have a 2.4 with three out. I have caps to put over the two going straight out the back.
I had straight pipes on a old harley and I would sometimes slide some baffles in it. That would also work.

Sport mufflers rock and so be it, it is my first line of defense against nimrod SUV tailgaters. You can make your own from the Upfixin' or European Car articles too. It just sounds right on my 2.4S MFI motor.

Well, I'm still waffling on this, for sure. It's one of those things I've been thinking about for awhile.

Eric - I am going to try and make Talladega, so I expect an ear full. :>)

Nice! Hook a sliding baffle up to the hand throttle cable lever. When tailgated, make like James Bond and pull the lever up....
