Can I Delete This?

I will soon be smogging my car for the last time. After which I am going to install some SSIs & delete as much smog crap as I can till I can ditch the CIS. I am also installing a carpet kit & wonder if after the smog test if I'll be able to get rid of the box (not sure the name of it) under the passenger seat. My motor is the stock 80 3 liter. Here is a pic.

I know that if I unplug this in my car, it runs like cr*p.

What year is your car? I was told that in a 1980 it's not as intergrated.

Eric Mckenna 01-30-2004 08:19 AM

I have a 78 Tub with a 82 motor.. and I do not have that box.. huh.. oh well looks like dead weight anyhow! hahaha

What is it?

That is where you put Steve Wong's chip :)

surflvr911sc 01-30-2004 09:21 AM

That's the Lambada(sp) brain, it runs the frequency valve for the '80-'83 CIS. I'm not sure exactly what the frequency valve does w/ out it but I know it's not good (runs like crap).

Once you go to carbs you can ditch it of course.

And no, Steve's chip wont do anything for that.

emcon5 01-30-2004 09:23 AM

That is the control box for the Lamda system.

On CIS-Lamda cars, fuel mixture is adjusted by controlling the duty cycle of the frequency valve. The Freq valve is essentially an EFI injector, on a fuel line going to the bottom chamber of the fuel distributor. It takes a rich/lean signal from the O2 sensor and adjusts the duty cycle up and down to compensate.

With no signal from the O2 sensor, the freq valve defaults to a slightly rich condition, but the freq valve is still operating. Without the control box (or the power relay next to it) it will not run, and you car will run really badly, if at all.

With its brain it sure would not run to well....

I believe that "Lambada" is the forbidden dance...merely performing it may be illegal in this country...come on its Friday...;-)

In my car that's where the amplifier sits. Perhaps you could find out how a 78 controls its Lambada frequencies....

If you attached an e-ram and a cool-collar to the box you can get 25% more horsepower and run 10 degrees cooler http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/128.gif

I've been messing with my interior over the past month and I was wondering the same thing about that box. Now I know. Paul, thanks for asking.

Paul, the only way you can eliminate that box and have your car run right, is to remove the frequency valve and turn your CIS system back into K-Basic.

That brain, even with the oxygen sensor unplugged, runs the frequency valve at a default setting. Usually 60% If I remember correctly.

Without the frequency valve operating at this default setting, you'd have to adjust the mixture to compensate, and it would throw off the accuracy of the mixture throughout the range. In other words, it may be in spec at idle, but go lean at higher revs for example.

So either convert the whole system back to K-Basic, or leave it alone. BTW, have you verified that it is working? If you unplug the little aluminum ice-cube relay next to the brain, does it run worse? If it runs the same when unplugged, then it isn't operating. That's your original relay BTW. The new replacement relays are black plastic. I bet the date stamp on that relay is '79 ot '80.

I also have an 80 Weissach. I'm in the process of upgrading: turbo tie rods, ball joints ferodo pads, Bilstein Sports. I gotta do it all before the little woman finds out. Eek! Next is the leather interior. Who can replace/replicate the Doric Gray interior? I know it's irreplaceable but gimmee some feedback on this. Let's stay in touch you and I. Shoot me an e-mail to compare notes. I've also wondered about the box. Just ask in this forum and you'll learn more about the subject than you really need to know.................

My car is a euro 83 and I just double checked and I have no relay just the box. Factory harness is still intact and I followed it into the tunnel past the shift coupler. I loose it under the car where it comes out of the tunnel but I see no relays under car. Could it be in the engine compartment? My car no longer has an air pump or lambda sensor.

Every couple months I have to go to John Walkers to get the CO set. When set car runs awsome after a couple months it surges at idle and stalls when cold. Still runs great when warmed up. Just wondering if this could be related? Car has a new WUR and checks out fine when CO is correct. Passed emissions no problem with no smog and GHL headers and dual out muff.
