These cars were reportedly wicked-difficult to drive.....

I think an early Excellence had a nice article on it too...from someone who re-built his that had a Saudi previous life....

Hi:

We had one here in our shop for several weeks as we fixed a bunch of things with it.

What would you like to know?

Amazing cars and frankly, no harder to drive than any other track-oriented 911 with big tires,... FAR easier than a 930 and lots more fun.

Steve or anyone - what size were the wheels and tires on the SC/RS? Were they the same as a turbo 911? Also, what braking system did the car have?

TIA...

The 953 is the 4 wheel drive version and the 954 is the 2 wheel drive version (oddly enough ) do a search on Google with these numbers and you should find quite a bit of info there with pics and race /rally history.

I want one.

Someday I want to build a SC/RS clone, time and money.

Although the early Dakar rallye cars were based (in part) on these SC/RS cars.....

...I believe the original SC/RS as posted in the pics originally... was only a 2WD car.

Frere's report in Road and Track of the time indicates it was tricky to drive...not very good straigh line stability or such...can't quite recall all the details...stiff springing / low weight / ride height not co-exisiting comfortably ( not discounting anything said by Steve W).

The parts bin for this car is cool too. It enables Porsche parts sources for 26-27-28...I think up to 30mm or larger rear torsion bars..something we had to go to aftermarket for otherwise.

Built in 84...when the 3.2's were in full swing...these were considered "evolution" of the prior 3.0 series...I think with Kugelfischer mechanical injection, because Bosch was no longer available with the multi-row plunger style injection used in previous cars.

Wil is right,...these were 2WD cars,...we had # 19 of 20 here in the shop.

Based on my experience with 911's, I'd bet that Paul Frere's example was either out of aligment or had lots of negative camber. Both play hell with straight line stability,....

We installed JRZ's on the one we had here and after cornerweight/alignment, it drove VERY well at high speed, despite the Yokohama DOT race tires it had.

The chassis is very unusual with many little details like suspension droop limiters and fiberglass encased rear trailing arms. All of the shock mounts and A-arms were heavily reinforced. They had combinations of Fuchs & BBS wheels with 930 brakes, too. Fenders, hood, doors were all thin aluminum, no door beams, and thin glass. It weighed 2150 on our scales.

The only crappy part of the car with the horrible Kugelfischer MFI pump. As they have no space cam, they really only run well at WOT and do not idle long without plug fouling, even with MSD's.

I still really want one, though.

Way to go! Thanks, Bill.

BTW: looks like the ride height's a little high. Hmmm...I guess that's the norm for a rally car, right?

Here's a link to an article at Rennlist which confirms the 4 wheel drive heritage of the 959 and 964 tested in the 953s.

Bones:
Not to nit-pick...although you're technically correct....the 2WD and later 4WD ( "Dakar") cars were not 2 different "versions" of the same car. One was the model 953 and the other was the model 954 ( which you also correctly stated).

I think it would be fairer to say one evolved from the other. When one hears "SC/RS"...this is commonly meant to mean the 2WD car which only had this SCRS label.

Yes, Bill V. used a ROW 915 on his car. It had the cooler like the one on the SC/RS pictured above.
