Oil Line and Cooler Installation

I am installing a Carrera fender mount oil cooler in my early 912 which came without any oil lines, tank, etc. Can any of you offer any advice or pictures on the installation process for both the oil lines front to rear and the fender mount cooler. I will be cutting off the battery box soon and then I have to fab something up to mount the cooler up in there. Also, there are indentations in the top corner of the front fender where it appears that the oil lines came up inside the door hinge area and into the fender...anyone with pics of this?

i just did this a few weeks ago. i swear, the hardest part is making sure you have all the parts. and that the parts are the right ones. you get the lines yet? it is wierd, but the system basically fits only one way. do search here, type "external oil cooler" and you will fall over, when you see how much it as been chatted about.

Guess if you need to fab a place for your cooler, you need a better view of what you are installing. These are the parts used to relocate the horns if you decide to do so. The black part is a replacement carrera fender strut and the other part mounts to it along with the horns. This is farther forward and allows room for the fan, if installed.

This is the entire cooler assembly with fan and carrera wiring harness that you will be mounting:

This is the lower bracket that will mount to the inner fender wall:

Note how it is mounted on rubber isolators:

This is the other side of the cooler with the rock guard/airguide:

Note how it is secured to the cooler with small plastic rivets:

And small metal clips (under seal):

i would be interested in knowing what your objectives are for this project? are you seeing high oil temps in day-to-day traffic? are you planning to track the car?

depending on the answers, you may not need to buy the fan and cut out the battery box. i left my battery box intact, and did not mount a fan. with the fan, i wouldn't have had sufficient room for my tire as it was turned, or when the suspension was under extreme load. i didn't want to cut out the battery box because i wanted to keep the car in its original configuration.

the reason i installed the cooler in the first place was to combat high temperatures at the track. my car is a stock 2.4 911E, and on hot track days, i would see oil temps of 220+. this was not good. after installing the oil cooler (sans fan), my oil temps dropped down to 200 - 205 on hot track days. as a side note, in order to improve air flow to the cooler while racing, i rigged my passenger side signal lamp wires so that i could do a quick disconnect of the turn signal assembly, remove the housing, and open the hole for add'l air flow.

by the way, on the street, i don't see anything above 180. so i chalked this project off as success. of the few mod's i've done to the car (SSI's, oil return lines, etc.), adding the oil cooler was the best project of them all. it took time, but i was amazed at how lines from a 80's P-car perfectly fit my '73. it wasn't cheap, but it was money well spent.

the only thing i can add to the photo's already posted are my battery box mounting solution (already emailed to you) and photos of how and where i drilled mounting bracket holes for the lines.

fintstone, you are the best! that is some great photo documentation. when i am into a project, i have a real hard time stopping to get the camera. kudos!

you know, just to add my opinion. i think anyone can modify the horn relocation without any special hardware. i probably did not do it by the book, but i did use the existing hardware. i simply bent the brackets so that the horns hang down and forward. i actually think my horn is louder now that they point towards the offending driver. haha.

I've been keeping my eyes open for a used cooler setup. It seems the pool of them has somewhat dried up. I used to see them all the time.

Unfixed..Thanks. I agree, moving the horns could well be done without the extra parts. I also had to fab a small bracket for the top because the fit was a tad off with the factory one. The fan may not be necessary for most uses and can be added later (just make sure you plug the thermostat hole). The wiring harness is easy enough to build...I posted a pretty good schematic for it recently.
