Do I stay stock?
I have a totally original 88 targa 930. I need to replace the 3dlz kkk turbo as the output pipe has a peice missing and it leaks boost.
I love the fact my car is original, I want to occasionally run it at the track with the club. I am not a concourse addict and I want a daily driver. I want to use it for timed tarmac rallies and the like. I need to replace the turbo, do I put a 3dlz back in or do I put in a K27? Im worried that if I put in a K27 then I start down the path of performance modifications. I admit that I quite enjoy the skill of driving this car managing speed/boost/shifting/lag. Can anyone point me in the direction of replacement KKK 3DLZ turbos?

I would do the K27.

I recommend you do the following:
a) Kokeln Intercooler b) K27 c) 1 bar spring d) B&B exhaust This will cost you a few grand, but will totally change the character of the car. Once you do that, you will be totally satisfied with your 930 and will never need to do anything but change the oil.

Go with the K-27, It was "stock" on later models.
And yes it would the start on road to mod's, a road most all 930 owner travel. It will make your track days a lot more fun!

I would do "upgrades" that are easily reversible... just in case.

An '88 Targa is in no sense desirable as a "collector car" and won't be in your lifetime. If you enjoy keeping it stock, that's fine and eminently admirable. But you won't be doing the Porsche World a bit of harm by making modifications, particularly if they're reversible and most particularly if they aren't of the Gemballa ilk...

Being that you are already contemplating doing the upgrade speaks largely about what you are considering. And your looking for further encouragement from us. And you will. Do it! This isn't a museum piece, its your car.

A K27 is a much better turbo for that car - it will give you lower spool times and maybe 30 more HP. It would be silly, IMO, to waste money on a new OEM style turbo for that car. This is almost like asking "I have to spend $1000 to fix my muffler. I can get an original replacement or for the same price get one that in all ways is the same, except I will get 30 more HP."

If Porsche was building your car they may very well go with the K27 since at this point it is a newer better part. There is something to be said for experience and technology.

OK you guys are right.... If I am going to own a 930 then I need to keep it updated and maintained. Looks like the K27 and a new exhaust for starters.
Looking through the posts having a good K27 on your 930 is actually an upgrade people look for when purchasing them. Which K27 and where do I get it?

I would do a google search on K27. I don't know if it is worth it to buy one in the USA. If so the Imagine Auto.com sells them.
