1989 911 C2 won't start
I'm posting this for my father as he is too embarassed/ashamed to ask for help.
He has a 1989 911 Carrera (C2 not C4) We removed the engine to replace the clutch and put new sound proofing in the engine bay and just clean it up a little over all. We put in a Centerforce Dual Friction cluth with new throw out bears relase fork flywheel bolts, also replaced the seal directly behind the flywheel as it was old and needed to be replaced. Upon removing the book we were extra careful to label everything so we didn't have to play the guessing game later on with electronic wires and where they go. We bolted the tranny back up to the engine and procedded to re-install. Finally we got it all bolted up.. wires pluged in, grounds screwed on, connected the battery... moment of truth.... and nothing. The buzzer sounds the gauges come on... everything like it used to but won't crank, the solenoid won't even click. So i got under the car with a voltmeter and tested for voltage at the starter. reading a good strong 12.7 volts, then i had him turn the key, again 12.7 volts on the solenoid. So we decided maybe we taped it to hard when removing it from the tranny (was a B****) so we ordered a new one thinking our problem would be solved. After another 4hrs of painful removal and installation of the starter we turn the key.. and nothing. buzzer comes on... lights work everything works but the engine. After staring at his manual for hours he came up with the idea maybe it was the ignition switch, so he bought a new back the part that plugs into all the wires that you can start with a screw driver. Well needless to say that didn't work either. Now i'm 600 miles from the car and can't help him and don't have a manual to look at to give him ideas. All of you own 911's hopefully you can shed some insite on this topic? Sorry for the long post -Ed

Does the starter turn when off the car and current is applied?

Verify voltage at starter solonoid. Does the car have a clutch switch?(preventing voltage at solinoid unless the clutch is fully depressed). Start testing the parts to avoid throwing money at it. Good luck!

the old starter that we thought was bad would not turn with current from the battery, we didn't test the new one off the car. And it never used to have a clutch switch, so it shouldn't now

This happened with my Carrera when we R&R'ed the engine and again with the starter. Both times we had the wires connected to the wrong posts on the starter.

Sorry Ed. I don't remember. It was a while ago and a bit of trial and error. Check Bentley's or 101 Projects or someone here might be able to post photos. The info is definitely here somewhere, if that's the problem.
