RUF 996 212 mph on Autobahn!
Autobahn on History Channel - It'll be on again late tomorrow night - 1 AM Eastern Time. RUF Porsche going 212 mph. I didn't know those water cooled boxers sounded so good! Plus history of Autobahn. Very cool.

Sure...water cooled boxers using the "pre water cooled" engine cases and architecture...why not?
These are more like water cooled 993 motors.... than they are water cooled standard new 911 ( 996) motors, don't forget. ---Wil Ferch

Yeah! What an awesome show? Interesting how controversial the 'night driving' test could create. I understand that nights mean less traffic, but I guess the Autobahn is well lit.
2 things I learned: 1. I now know how to pronounced Ruf (before tonite, I thought it was 'rough.'). 2. The yellow car was pretty. Did not care much for the 9xx cars with 'boxster' headlights, but that care looked good on TV. |

I went just about that fast when I visited Ruf. The scary part was that we were NOT on an Autobahn, but rather a local road with a speed limit of about 1/3 what we were doing there. Other cars were on the road too. VERY scary.

I was planning on vacationing in Montana once, just to drive fast. What's the latest with the State's no-speed-limit law?

Montana now has a speed limit (think it is 75) and I saw that show on last night. My wife was watching and she said "Oh god we will be living there for a while"

Montana does have a speed limit, but they are very liberal with it. Last summer I had one of Montana's finest come up behind me on my bike while I was doing about 95. He pulled alongside and gave me the hand motion to slow it down... then he kept going

When that RUF does 212 mph on the Autobahn (at night), there are two cameramen in the car with him! How would you like to be the guy in the back seat? Without the additional 325 pounds of reporters along, I wonder if it could hit 220 mph? What a ride.

Montana speed limits are about as liberal as they come. As long as people are reasonably sane (don't speed in residential areas, that sort of thing) the cops are pretty reasonable too. If they do decide to pull you over (rather than just the lights or hand wave warning) and they do decide to ticket you (rather than the verbal warning), it's a $5 flat fee payable on the spot. Ah reckon 'at's a fair sight better'n de People's Republic of Washington, next-door...
Emission -- correct me if I'm wrong, but weight of the car doesn't directly affect top speed; just acceleration, right? Dan

On level ground that is... ![]() It just dawned on me that the weight will make the car ride closer to the ground, it might have gone slower without the extra crew. Last edited by thabaer; 02-05-2004 at 10:58 AM.. |

I liked the way they patrolled the Autobahn. Ticket people who are tailgating and driving in the wrong lane. That makes a lot of sense to me.
In most cases it isn't speed that causes accidents its stopping distance and speed differential. We should try that in this country.

can you imagine if the deer ran across the road in front of the RUF car while he was going 212MPH?
