"Leland and the Quatrains a Legacy of loath"

How many of you would trade your SC for one of those diluted 993 type machines? Here’s the skinny:
The wife has decided she wants to go back to school. Could potentially be out of the AF by June of 04 (Palace Chase for you Mil types). This would result in having our budget cut by some degree for some time. In numerous conversations, the SC has come under hostile fire from OPFOR due to it’s quaint life of sitting in the garage… with it’s owner, spending most of his free time on the computer, trying to find ways to spend more money on it. I can truly see her side of things, but I refuse to be Porscheless again. I did it for 9 months and I have vowed (as much as a 25 yr old can vow) to never go without one again. So, to continue the saga of tug and war between the married couple, I have been tossing around a sort of beneficial (to me) compromise. What if I were to sell my 911 and her ’01 Jetta… (she doesn’t really like the Jetta). Between the two we could buy a daily driver 993 (I’m seeing them hit the sub-$30K mark) and she could take over the Chevy pickup. There are times out here when a pickup is necessary and frankly, I love that truck. Since it turned cold up here, she has only driven the truck, leaving me in that wicked-bad Jetta (it’s a 5 spd). So, this solution would leave us with a reasonable mode of transportation (pickup) and get Leland the car of his dreams (did I say that???) while reducing the overall size of the Pate northern-tier fleet by 1/3. I can probably use some of the lawyer-blood in me to turn and twist this into sound logic, which by the way, I know it isn’t. But dammit, I don’t want to be forced into Porsche celibacy!

...and I have NO idea what prompted the title of this thread... my fingers just typed whatever.
Seriously... somtimes I wish I could go back and change it.
I have problems...

having just driven a 993 today, I can say that odds are you'll still spend a fair amount of time on the computer looking for ways to spend money on the car.

And will she be happy driving the truck? She might say "honey, you drive the truck, I'll take the 993" and you're porsche-less again.

I havent researched the 993 market, but I dont think its going to be real easy to find one as sorted as your SC is for sub $40k. Most of the ones Ive seen in the low $30k range have been either salvage or really beat on. Although, you could probably still get financing or a personal loan for a 993 with the intent of paying it off early and avoiding as much of the interest as possible.

edit:
I agree with Z, keep it

Take mikez advise (did I type that), sell the Jetta and take the $$ and put into your SC!

Just ask any of those DOCTORS who have done the 3.6 engine transplant.

Leland,

VERY QUICKLY buy something for the SC and install it. I know, you said you don't need those Wet Okole seat covers, but now is time to order up a set.

Remember what happened to Nostatic when he mentioned the possibility of selling his car.

I give you three, four days max before trouble hits. Act now while you can.

what John said...the karma police are out in full force. Concrete is harder than you think.

And you should have seen the moon on Saturday. We were driving to dinner as it was rising over downtown LA...a surreal orange through the haze on the horizon.

#1 - Why is the SC not a daily driver? It must be by choice.

#2 - I like Mike and Dan's choice, sell the dub and reinvest proceeds into the SC.

#3 - You could sell the SC and the dub, and get a pretty good condition Carrera as a daily driver without going upside down on the cost. A bit more liveable than the SC, if that's what would make wifey happy.

#4 - I take it that OPFOR must remain, making the need to keep her happy a priority issue?

i have a Chevy 4x4, SC, and 993. Wouldn't want to be without any one of them! (also an older 5 series BMW sedan for the times when normal sized humans must be accommodated in the rear seats)
You could probably drive a 993 in Montana in the winter, esp. a c4. but, i can't imagine it being much fun. (think of your blood pressure as you see Bubba-Joe's push bar get ever larger in your rear view mirror as you just stopped for a red light at an icey intersection).
I was a nervous wreck with mine for the very brief time i spent in Canada and down the I-15 through Montana and Idaho in late November. Hockey-puck hard 285 SO2s do not instill much confidence when it is below zero F. plus, you worry about every other bozo sliding into you etc.
993s really show their capabilities at fairly high speeds. (and show their weight in really tight, slow twisties).

Gotta chime...have to admit, I've been thinking the same thing. I use my SC as my daily driver, and CINCHOUSE has promised an upgrade when she gets a job (not much luck...curse of the service spouse). However, I need first to replace her beater first (I'm thinking a Stratus from a GSA auction...wink, wink, nod, nod) to leave me perfectly positioned for the 993! So my advice...execute the plan, sell the SC (a moment of silence please) and the Jetta. Tell the wife you're letting her have YOUR truck (try to shed a tear or two here and try to look truly reluctant) while you look for a "suitable" replacement for both vehicles. Let her know with the newer vehicle you won't be spending gobs of money on upgrades (ok, lie to her...trust me it works).

It will work...don't worry

I've got a lead on a nice-but-higher-mileage (under 100k) `96 C4s for under $35k. With AWD, you could even drive it duing those Montana winters! PM me if interested. (nevermind the sub-plot to undermine the SCWDP. Muhhahahhahahaa ).

Sell Jetta. Keep SC. Keep pickup truck. From the Jetta proceeds, spend $500 on snow tires for the SC. Spend $500 on something nice for the better half. Do not buy anything else.

I bet you'll like an extra $14K in the bank (or whatever you do get for the Jetta) better than rolling the dice on a 993 and then not having a penny for repairs or upgrades. Nothing like having an extra cash cushion.

Hey - he's got an SC now, right? It's not like it was a pre '74 or something else as good.

i am ptetty sure that the people who are suggesting to drive a (very nice) SC as a daily driver during winter in Great Falls, Montana have never spent much time during winter in Great Falls, Montana
