New (to me) SC

Long time listener, first time caller...
Having just picked up my '78 SC, I wanted to share the info. with fellow 911 enthusiasts. It's a car that interested me for a couple of reasons. First, it has 35k orig. (documented) miles. Second, the car must have been special ordered since it's equipped with very few options and it is, indeed, a US car. It has wind-up windows, manual seats, manual heat, no A/C, no RH mirror, no sunroof, no fog lights, leatherette int., etc., etc.

I have the original order form from the dealer and it shows the following options (which are all present on the car): Leather Covered Sport steering wheel, Bilstein shocks, black window trim, AM/FM stereo, rear speakers, center console, Undercoat and an Engine Compartment Light.

The car has been fanatically maintained and it's just had Carrera tensioners and the updated clutch installed by Dan Jacobs. Too, the previous owner sent a set of 7&8 inch x 16 Fuchs to Woods for chroming (arghh!!!) and had those installed. Given the car's India red finish, I think the chromed Fuchs are a little much but they're growing on me (no polishing!). My wife told me to order a large selection of gold chains and pinky rings ;-)

Other nice touches include a complete, unused tool kit, air compressor, India Red paint stick (with polishing compound in the cap), vinyl gloves for spare tire changing as well as the owner's manual and warranty book with the original "Protecto-Plate". As you can tell from my rambling post, I'm rather excited about my new car.

The previous owner installed a factory front spoiler only. I don't know what I'm going to do about that. I like the clean look of the car without a rear spoiler and I like the look of the front spoiler so as long as there's no good reason to change it, I'll just leave it as it is, I guess. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know approximately how many SC's may have been ordered like mine? Dan Jacobs said he's only seen one other US SC that had so few options.

Regards,
Steve Ross

Steve, welcome, sounds like a nice car. Having a PO the did good maintenance is a blessing, although you have to wonder how much he knew about 911s if he had the Fuchs chromed. I wouldn't sweat it. I am on the other end of the option scale & am deleting most of them. Enjoy.

I too have a stripped-down '78SC sans the electrical bits and pieces (windows, ant., flag mirror). I am unsure if these were Option Deletes or if the '78 was a Plain Jane.

Great looking car. Nice subtle red too.

holy crap...nice car (and I hate red). Are you going to drive it or keep it a garage queen? If it hasn't been driven a lot lately, be prepared to replace some stuff. Ask me how I know ;)

Nice SC. VT? NH? MA? RI? ???

rpiper 02-11-2004 09:28 AM

Very nice! My 3rd SC was a 78US car with similar option deletes. It was a race car so it was the perfect platform to start with. Suggestions for you? 1)Lower it 2)get rid of the chrome wheels, maybe go to 15 7&8 Fuchs with RS finish 3) get rid of the shark fins 4)don't get tempted to track it and turn it into a race car. There are so few clean 78 SCs like yours it would be a shame to do that. Here's my current 78SC (sorry couldn't resist a photo op)

Also

Looks like the car also has H-4 headlight upgrades. Add that to your list.

Sharp car, the chrome wheels look great.

Nice car! My vote is to drive it, which by the excitement in your post is probably exactly what you will do. Congratulations.

Wow, a couple of new guys with new cars today. Both are sweet autos. Drive like mad!

nostatic 02-11-2004 09:41 AM

I don't think they are chrome wheels...likely just high polish.

This one has had some work done on it. This was one of the cars SCVWGUY asked about last July. Not many 35K mile india red 78 SC's forsale up here in New England, so this is probably the same one.
