original chrome RS mirrors....somehow just don't do it....

'bout ready to sent the RS to the paint booth and wondered what everybody thinks about mirrors.....I have swapped all the chrome for black trim everywhere...door handles, windows,etc...car will be Porsche "iris blue"...only thing polished are the outer rims of my black centered Fuchs. I had planned to paint and use door mounted 993 mirrors instead of the "period" chrome rectangular mirrors thinking that they would look weird against a dark car with no chrome showing....and even weirder if I painted them black to match the rest of the trim. What do you guys think.....post some comparison pictures...please before its too late!

If you have the black trim you could weld up the holes in the doors and do the 935/yellowbird mirrors.

please don't use 993 mirrors. nice mirrors but they just don't look right to me. I would go with the 935 type mirror...i think if you go to the rgruppe web page you will find an aubergine 911rs copy with black trim and 935 mirrors that looks good. when I lived in CA in the late 80s I saw this car and it looked great. I think it was featured in Excellence once and was also in an ad for parts heaven or one of those outfits.

again, maybe it is just me but the 993 mirrors will look waaaay out of place and wrong for your car. ...not quite as bad as those tornado mirrors or the miami vice mirrors people used to do but not quite right.

Maybe you could have the 72-74 type mirror anodized? ...if you don't like the 935 mirror idea

Is the car going to be iris blue from the 80s or from the 90s? Also with the all blacked out trim you could go with 993 mirrors I think that would good

Since you already have all the trim in black, using the "period" chrome mirrors does not look like an (aesthetically) good idea. If nothing else is chrome, it'll look funny. At the same time, the chrome mirrors blacked out do not look good either. A while back there was a very controversial early car with an amazing paint job, all black, all blacked-out. It had the original mirrors in black and they did not look that good. (And I like the look of "bad-ass-black")

Definitely not the 993, or any "aero" mirrors.

With the look of your car, I think the ruf close-to-the-body mirrors would look nice. They are kinda mean, but I think you've gotta be able to back that look up w/ some speed. I have a pic of a blue 964 w/ those mirrors but it's on the home computer. I'll post later.

Its going to be the color from the 90s...I see a lot of the boxters painted this dark almost metallic blue....I just did a search on the 935 mirrors, and I saw 6 or 7 different mirrors used on those guys. I can't stand the cheap looking black mirrors that look like they came from "auto parts r us"....and the chrome won't work w/ the black, and most people I've talked with actually dont like the later "corner window" mounted mirrors for poor visability reasons. And Shuie, I'm probably going to have to weld up the old mirror mounting wholes anyways to mount these correctly....but stop giving me more WORK suggetions!! Ok...I'll humour you guys that don't think these would look right if you find a picture of them mounted on a RS where they just DON'T work. Otherwise somebody come to my rescue and post a couple cars where they DO work

Heres an early car with black trim and the 935/yellowbird mirrors. Im not a big fan of the aqua color, but the car is one of my favorites otherwise.

These things look too cool. Im going to black trim just so I can use them on my '73.

No doubt the visibility is more limited than with a conventional mirror. Ive read they are supposed to be adjusted to the blind spot of the car and used with convex glass to help with visibility. I never change lanes without looking over my shoulder anyway, so the coolness factor wins for me

I like iris blue on later cars. I think early cars should have a bright color. Anyways good choice on color here it is on my 993

Steve...nice color...and I actually like the color of the car Jack "linked "....but I really can't seem to get enthused about the little "corner pocket things". For some reason for me...they detract from the car. Maybe I need some front-on and rear forward pictures of both types of mirrors. It's kinda like the wheel thing...most wives (sorry) don't understant why all P-cars don't have 4 1/2 x 15 fuchs....and it's not ALL about driveabilty and traction....the "look"thing is important. Otherwise we'd all drive minivans...god would that suck. So, nobody out there has any pics supportive of the 993 mirros on the RS eh? And it took awhile to find some at a reasonable price too....yes, I did buy a pair, and yes they may be back up for sale. Jack...you got any pics buried on your computer anywhere....why'd you decide to keep yours stock?

Mine aren't stock. They're the larger 74-75 rectangle chrome ones. They're similar, but the 73 ones are too small to be useful as mirrors, in my opinion.

John Walker put a car together with aero mirrors. With the later wheels, especially, it looks all right.

Personally -- with Fuchs, but blacked out trim -- I'd go with painted period-correct mirrors, either in the body color or black.

I've never used those mirrors, so I'm not sure about visibility, but they do look mean.
