Question Vin # Significance, Have both WPOEAO and WPOZZZ #'s

My '81 SC Targa has WPOEAO917BS160902 on the windshield frame and WPOZZZ917BS160902 elsewhere on the chassis. Does anybody know what I might have, or is this typical? Thank you in advance.

Brian,

Except for the '7' which should be a 'Z' before the 'BS' ... you would have a ROW 'gray' market car. The VIN on the windshield would seem to have multiple errors in it to be a USA VIN, and would seem to have been fabricated by the 'importer' to look like a non-ROW car. Specifically, the 'EAO' should be 'AAO,' and the '7' after the '91' should be 0.

All of the VIN numbers on the car should agree!

I'm not sure this is correct....

ZZZ is common for the front trunk area ( since as the "body" is built..it doesn't know whether it'll end up as a Rest-of-World ( ROW) car...or a USA car).

The number on the windshield usually has characters that are NOT ZZZ...and this is the official VIN for USA cars.

Do a further search here on this board....

Warren is correct. VIN's should always match, and ZZZ is the ROW indicator, which should be in all locations on non-USA cars. This sounds like someone passing a ROW car off as a US-delivered one.

Which VIN is printed on the title?

EDIT: Looks like I was wrong.

I believe Warren is corect in regards to the early style 911xxxxxxx chasis numbers, but the newer style this did change.

Mine is the same way. The windshield pillar is WP0AA0916CS12xxxx, and stamped in the sheetmetal by the smugglers box is WP0ZZZ916CS12xxxx.

I think this is even mentioned in Bruce Anderson's book.

WPO=Porsche
EAO=VDS code (ZZZ would mean gray market car)
91=911
7=test digit
B=year, 1981
S=Stuttgart
1=911
6=911 Targa, USA/Canada. (ROW Targa would be 4)
0902= serial number

Well, I'll bet I'm wrong. It would make sense that an A-pillar stamp would be added as part of the federalization process, since European countries didn't even require an A-pillar display, initially.

Here's Bruce Anderson's decoder:

I'm tellin ya....

starting around the early 80's and later cars....ZZZ for the raised portion next to the smugglers box is common for USA and ROW cars...and will *not* be the proper VIN for USA cars....

The riveted panel on the windshield post and/or the sticky in the door jamb *is* the VIN number ...and this will be ZZZ foir ROW...and will *not* be ZZZ for USA....

My 86 is exactly as discribed by Will, EB0 on the windshield, door posts and sticker in trunk, ZZZ stamped on the chassis in the trunk.

Will is (again) correct, in that the ZZZ is stamped on the body near the smuggler's box for US cars as well as ROW, at least from the early '80's on.

Some other helpful VIN Info.

Just the facts, Ma'am .....

I happened to know this one because it scared the Bejeepers out of me when I was looking to buy cars in my early Porsche life. I thought it just couldn't be !....so many hack jobs out there ???

Cool. I just found out that I have #2061 of 2066 total US Carreras. Nearly the last one built. Too bad I have Bastardized it already.

How 'bout it, Will, I already owned this one 3 yrs. and discovered this, and wondered if I had been burned.
Regarding Jack's question, the title matches the windshield pillar plate. Thanks for your responses. I feel a lot better now!!!
I learn something new every day.
