G50 gear oil
I searched, but most of the discussions seem to center around 915 boxes. The 944 seems to like Redline 75w90 gear oil, but I saw a few mentions for Mobil 1 for the G50. So what do you guys use? One work better than the other? Anything else?

redline
When I bought my car it had Mobil 1 in the G50, did not like the way it performed, seemed a little clunky. Switched to Redline 75-90 and shifts smoother. I have used Redline gear oils in 3, now 4 different manual trans. and had good luck with all of them.
Check to make sure you get the right GL# as all gear oils are not the same. For more info on that cheeck out the redline website. |

I've used Swepco and Mobil 1 so far. Mobil is far better and less noisy.
Next change I plan to try Redline. Had good results with that stuff in my Laser. A guy from Redline recommended a blend of different Redline gear oils for my G50 911 and the Laser. For the G50 I believe he recommended 1 qt. Lightweight Gear Oil (which is a 75W/80W GL-5) and the remainder 75W/90NS (has no friction modifier/additive), regardless of whether you have a LSD or not. He claimed that the Porsche ZF clutch pack-type limited slip differentials don't suffer from chatter like other LSD's do. The NS fluid also is claimed to allow faster synchronization. I believe the Lightweight Gear Oil recommendation is to help cold shifting? http://www.redlineoil.com/frames/gearoil.htm http://www.redlineoil.com/redlineoil/gearolti.htm

Just be careful as most Redline products are GL-4 rated...you need GL-5.
Some Redline products are GL-5. ---Wil Ferch

According to the service manual that came with my 87 Targa it should be 75-90W GL-5.
