Curiosity question. When you have a mechanic change a CV joint boot do they take it apart and clean it or just put more grease in and put on a new boot.

If you didn't take them all apart this could be a quick job. On the other hand taking the inner apart and running solvent through the fixed outer would have to take at least an hour probably more like two.

Thats a good question. I would hope that a responsible mechanic would do the cleaning/inspection too. I called one of the porsche specialists in town this morning, and he said it was a "4 hour job + parts, $24 per boot).....

Then I drove over to see my usual guy, a porsche/audi mechanic who Ive used before and he said "Its an hour job on each side + parts)". Im gonna have him do it on Wed and Ill ask him if he will clean/inspect.

If you ask the shop to repack for you, it will cost the same price as the new axle replacment. To repack, the shop need to charge the labor hour. It hour charged is about the same to replace with a new axle. If you repack youself, you will save $$$.

Don't know if the previous post is spam or not (duh!) that revived this old thread, but beware. This is a true DIY (messy) job, one of the first I did on my car (all CV joints looked like new at 50K miles), but make sure you get QUALITY (OEM) replacement boots. It would suck to do this and have another torn boot in short order. YMMV....

Here is a YouTube of how to do the outer CV Porsche boots easily by Dr. Wernher Von Braun.

PMB Performance is now a vendor for PP. When mine went I did the rebuild and repack from an expert. Didn't last long.

I bought the remans from PMB. Never looked back. Easy R and R.
