				CV Joint Question

Problem with the on going restoration. My car is an 85 Carrera 3.2. I am at the point of restoring the driveshafts. The shaft is fitted with an inner CV joint 108mm Dia and outer of 100mm dia. The outer CV joint - how do you remove it - there are no bolts holding it to the stub axle - all I can see is the cover that the rubber boot is clamped to being 'pressed into' the joint. I presume there is a circlip on the outer edge of the shaft but to get to it would involve damaging this steel cover. All parts suppliers show up to 85 and 85-89 911's as having the same CV joints inner / outer but this does not appear to be the case. I think my best option would be to just get 2 new shafts. Rather than rebuild the existing. | ||

The out CV is one unit with the axle. In a recent post, some stated that it is possible to remove/replace the outer boot and repack the outer CV

Correct, it's pressed onto the shaft and isn't replaceable. It can be cleaned and lubed and the boot replaced, but the inner joint has to come off to do that. But you should do a search. Someone posted that their machine shop mistakenly pressed the outer joint off too. I don't know what good that would do you because you can't find the outer joint as a separate new part.

The joint appears to be able to slide (very slightly) on the drive shaft but from what I could tell - the outer casing of the CV joint is the inner casing of the stub axle - which would mean that to replace it would mean replacing the stub axle also - again making me think about just changing the whole axle - approx cost £125.
