windshield installation

Can someone describe the rope trick in some detail? I have the gasket and trim on the windshield and am ready for the actual installation. Thanks, Charlie

Rope Trick

Thanks Rick, but I cannot find a detailed description of the rope trick. How does one get the rope in the groove and does the flap that covers the lip need tucking in around the rope? Charlie

The rope is tucked into the groove of the gasket..all the way around. There should be a few inches excess where they meet....not tucked in but exposed. Then the glass and gasket (as one unit) are pushed into the frame. as you are seating the glass/gasket make sure that both ends of the rope are exposed on the inside of the car. The rope (cord) end is pulled along/around the entire gasket. As it is pulled it brings the lip of the gasket over the edge of the frame.

Does that make sense?

rope trick

Does one start at a particular point ? Do you put detergent in the groove? What kind of rope? How does one get the rope in the groove? Chuck

I think this is in the link I posted or at least available through the search. The rope/cord is as thick as a pencil. You just press it into the groove...and yes you can use liquid soap, silicone or what Zeke mentions in the thread I posted.

the short of it is:

With the gasket on the windshield, put in the aluminum trim.

Now put a 3/16" polyester rope in the rubber channel. This channel is where the frame of the car will go. So basically a lip of the rubber gasket goes inside the car. You use the rope to pull the lip over the car body.

I used a healthy dose of Dove soap and water on mine.

If you use sealant, you may get squeaks. The aluminum trim should hold the gasket and windshield in just fine.

My glass place used sealant, after I repeatedly told him I was looking for someone to install it without sealant because of squeaks. He used sealant but "only on the outside", he said. He continued to say he could only warranty no leaks if he used sealant. I already told him I wasn't worried about leaks. The gaskets seem like they should be replaced every 7 years or so anyway.

Yep - now it squeaks in the summer time. The top of my dash (warped as it is) rubs against the windshield.

I prefer a smaller twine and wrap 2x around. That way if you miss in a corner(it does happen with only one person) you can try again without pulling the whole thing out to reload string.
