I shot the SKS Stone Guard Today! Pics!!

Today I sprayed the rear underside and wheel wells. With the help of the archives and Mike Kast I chose Wurth SKS Stone Guard. I bought it from www.carcareonline.com along with the Wurth splatter gun. Used 2 1000 ml bottles and I put it on pretty thick. Took about 60 hrs to clean everything up before shooting and 1 hour to spray then 2 hours to cleanup afterwards. Next, I'll shoot some Guards Red over the whole thing and voila!! One tip, don't wear short pants to do this :-)

Craig,

Great work, it's going to turn out really nice! I need to do the same thing, but it's too cold and I'm too lazy!

Craig, looks good. Did you strip off the original undercoating before hand?

Matt - No, I hope I never have to do that again!! The cleanup of the dirt & grime was miserable!!
Art - I wouldn't if it was cold either!
Marc - Thanks! I did not strip off the original. I removed all the grease & grime and any loose origainal stuff. It looked like there had been some black undercoating applied at one time and I ground it off. Then I scuffed it all with a pretty rough grit paper. There was a bunch of the waxy cosmoline stuff and it was a b---- to get off. All in all the original stuff wasn't to bad, I just wanted to give a really good sealing! I see yours is (in pieces) also?

Hi Will,

I was thinking they would be much easier to get back in! Is there something I'm not understanding (obviuosly MUCH I'm not) but specifically the bars?

See, I wasn't paying attention!

After reading again, you said torsion bar bushings. Yes, I se that could be a problem. I decided to use ERs Polybronze setup and I thought they would be fairly simple to fit. Maybe I need to be enlightened a bit!!

Maybe it's not a problem, but the "hole" that the rear bushings fit-in....seem to be (now) covered with Wurth stuff on its ID. Wouldn't that make the hole "smaller" and the bushing fit either tighter..or (gulp) not be able to fit at all ??

That is pretty!

I thought that scrubbing my underside was enough for my restoration. Now the suspension drop/rehab and new stoneguard seems neccesary. Push back the timeline another few weeks!! But I want to drive ....

A related question. My color is brown, so it is a little difficult to tell what areas were painted the color of the finish vs. being left grey - especially in the wheel wells - Can I get guidance from those who have stock original cars (1975 era) with more contrasting colors. It seems like the areas that were easy to see and spray were covered with the finish color and the far reaches just didn't get covered. The underside beyond the pinch welds is left grey. Opinions?

P.S. Can I rent your $56 gun??

Hey notmytarga,

Can't rent it but I'd let you borrow it! You could PM me when you're ready. Let me know.

Will - I took extra care to cover the torsion tube with an old towel stuffed in there. Might be a little on the edge that would need to be scraped off. I'm not sure how tight the Polybronze fits.
