An old picture of my car

I found this picture of my car. It was taken in the spring of 1991 in Carle Place Long Island. I had just purchased it in February of that year. Hopefully I will have it looking better than that eventually.

This is a picture of the car in SoCal when I received my world famous vanity plate. ( Well at least world famous in my own mind)

Pat, are you suffering from bitter beer face? Kidding, couldn't resist.

It has been a year + since I have driven the car so I am missing it. My other car is a beat up 1992 S10 pickup with a 5 speed. It is just not the same.

Only what is on the web site. I have most of the fenders, hoods, and bumpers stripped. It will be a few more weeks before I get a chance to paint them. Then it will be time to start putting it all back together.

I just looked at the pics of your restoration on your website, and..... HOLY SCHMOLY!!! The level of disassembly , painting and reassembly you've undertaken is just incredible, and the work you've completed looks really nice ! Stay the course and enjoy the results of your work.

Well if I were your neighbor and you started spray painting car parts or a car for that matter outside I wouldn't be happy with it either.
The temporary booth I built in my garage is enclosed with two doors and uses an intake fan and filter plus an exhaust fan and filter. Your not going to find overspray outside of the garage. When I am done for the day the garage door comes down and it looks like any other house on the block. Actually, it is one of the nicer looking homes on the block. I just finished remodeling the inside and outside a year ago. I have lived in the neighborhood over 3 years and my neighbors know I am a DIY'er. I have never had a bad comment from any of them. In fact they are pretty amazed at the things I am capable of and the projects I have done.

That is truly incredible!

How many hours work in total do you reckon you have invested in the whole job?

Wow, that's amazing! Really nice work. I would like to do something along those lines to my '82 coupe, or at least a really good factory color repaint. It doesn't make any economic sense, but then things of beauty frequently don't.

I am really impressed w/ your level of ingenuity w/ the rotiserie, spray booth, etc..., talk about keeping the work in-house!

You should organise a Pelican re-assembly party some weekend, I for one would be happy to give you one day of my time to assist. There are plenty of good hands in the area who are always looking for a chance to hang out and help.

Damn, that is beautiful work. Did you just jump into this, or do you have some applicable experience that allowed you to do such a good job?

Wow, that is impressive.

I sent you a few e-mails last summer - I intended to come see the car on the rotisserie - my life got too busy.

Is it still mounted on it?

Ben:

I can't say exactly how many hours I have put in so far but it is an awful lot. I know I would not be willing to pay someone to put all that time in. When it comes to paying someone to do the work I am the cheapest around. I don't pay myself a dime and I abuse myself regularly by overworking myself.

JGordon:

Mostly self taught when it comes to working on cars and body work. I do a lot of reading/research and ask lots of questions. The Rotisserie was someone elses design I just built it to suit my needs. The paint booth came from comments I read on the internet by people who have done the same thing.

Emission:

Yep, it is still on the rotisserie and will be for a while.

SundayPunch:

I use to have the other car plate cover on the wifes car. If I put it on the truck I don't think anyone would believe it.

I have always had the desire to restore a car in my own way and time. I guess this is my dream come true or is it my nightmare come true. (just kidding) I have no idea how it will all turn out in the end. Hopefully, it will be something I can be proud of and enjoy for the rest of my life. Besides it is teaching me a hell of a lot about my car.
